Excerpt from Episodes of Anglo-Indian History It is a frequent complaint that the English public know little of India. It is certainly curious that, until within the last few years, the study of Indian history formed no part of the ordinary curriculum of our schools; though it might have been supposed that a record so full of brilliant deeds would have had a strong and special attraction for our English youth. One reason, however, for this general indifference or ignorance may have been the want of popular books upon the subject, calculated to engage the attention of the ordinary reader. Down to quite a recent date, almost the only compositions of this kind were Lord Macaulay's picturesque essays on Clive and Warren Hastings. And though much, it is true, has recently been done in this direction, there still remains room, if I mistake not, for a compilation such as the present, in which the leading facts of Anglo-Indian history are presented without unnecessary detail. In truth, it has been my desire to tell my story with the utmost simplicity, believing that its deep, intrinsic interest cannot fail to secure the reader's attention. By the nineteenth century the British had ruled India for over a hundred years, and had consolidated their power over the sub-continent. Until 1858, when Queen Victoria assumed sovereignty following the Indian Rebellion, the country was run by the East India Company - by this time a hybrid of state and commercial enterprises and eloquently and fiercely attacked as intrinsically immoral and dangerous by Edmund Burke in the late 1700s. Seeking to go beyond the statutes and ceremony, and show the reality of the interactions between rulers and ruled on a local level, this book looks at one of the most interesting phenomena of British India - the 'Eurasians'. The adventurers of the early years of Indian occupation arrived alone, and in taking 'native' mistresses and wives, created a race of administrators who were 'others' to both the native population and the British ruling class. These Anglo-Indian people existed in the zone between the colonizer and the colonized, and their history provides a wonderfully rich source for understanding Indian social history, race and colonial hegemony.

This famous book is often cited by researchers and writers on the community, it consists of 512 pages of brilliantly researched history and analysis by the author who let the community through its most difficult period. These Books are an attempt to fairly represent the history of the community by works by Anglo Indians themselves. While acknowledged is an outstanding work of research and scholarship by historians, the book is also interesting to read, as it tells a fascinating story. Frank Anthony Chronicles the history of the Anglo Indian community and covers the main periods in the life of the Community, outlining their achievements and their illustrious history. The first part is a account of the Earliest times of the Anglo Indians, 1639 to the period between the founding of the main settlements in Madras by the East India company and their expansion into the South Of India in 1791. The second part covers the period of conquest from 1791 to the great Indian mutiny. The book also covers the post mutiny period to the years after India's independence. In the Third part Frank Anthony, chronicles the post Independence battles that the community faced and life in India after the country became independent.
