"(Eco)Anxiety in Nuclear Holocaust Fiction and Climate Fiction: Doomsday Clock Narratives demonstrates that disaster fiction-nuclear holocaust and climate change alike-allows us to unearth and anatomize contemporary psychodynamics, and enables us to identify pre-traumatic stress as the common denominator of seemingly unrelated types of texts. These Doomsday Clock Narratives argue that earth's demise is soon and certain. They are set after some catastrophe and depict people waiting for an even worse catastrophe to come. References to geology are particularly important-in descriptions of the landscape, the emphasis falls on waste and industrial bric-a-brac, which is seen through the eyes of a future, post-human archaeologist. Their protagonists have the uncanny feeling that the countdown has already started, and they are coping with both traumatic memories and pre-traumatic stress. Readings of novels by Walter M. Miller, Nevil Shute, John Christopher, J.G. Ballard, George Turner, Paolo Bacigalupi, Maggie Gee, Ruth Ozeki and Yoko Tawada demonstrate that the authors are both indebted to a century-old tradition and inventively looking for new ways of expressing the Pre-TSS common in contemporary society. This book is written for an academic audience (postgraduates, researchers and academics) specializing in British Literature, American Literature, and Science Fiction Studies"--

“There are two problems for our species’ survival—nuclear war and environmental catastrophe, ” says Noam Chomsky in this new book on the two existential threats of our time and their points of intersection since World War II. While a nuclear strike would require action, environmental catastrophe is partially defined by willful inaction in response to human-induced climate change. Denial of the facts is only half the equation. Other contributing factors include extreme techniques for the extraction of remaining carbon deposits, the elimination of agricultural land for bio-fuel, the construction of dams, and the destruction of forests that are crucial for carbon sequestration. On the subject of current nuclear tensions, Chomsky revisits the long-established option of a nuclear-weapon-free zone (NWFZ) in the Middle East, a proposal set in motion through a joint Egyptian Iranian General Assembly resolution in 1974. Intended as a warning, Nuclear War and Environmental Catastrophe is also a reminder that talking about the unspeakable can still be done with humor, with wit and indomitable spirit.

"The anxiety caused by the thought of nuclear war causes some people to avoid the topic altogether, some to despair, and others to place unwarranted confidence in scientific or governmental control. However, the vivid characters and realistic settings of fiction can bring home the impact of a nuclear war in a way that makes the topic difficult to avoid and allows readers to confront their fears and phobias. This bibliography study is the only compliation of its kind to deal exclusively with nuclear war in fiction. The first five chapters provide a historical survey of the development of the nuclear war theme and a study of the causes and aftermath of nuclear war as treated in literature. In addition, Brians considers the significant failure of some works to confront the subject and the success of others as educational tools. With a clear focus on the subject of war, this work does not deal with such related topics as nuclear accidents, reactor disasters, or near-war situations. The bulk of the book is given over to the detailed, annotated bibliography which consists of over 800 entries with associated checklists. Intended to provide scholars, librarians, and general readers with ready access to a great variety of information about his body of writing, the bibliography lists both hardcover and paper editions of books and the reprinting of each short story and corrects several errors in other standard reference works. In his critical analysis and through the annotations in the bibliography, Brians attempts to improve our understanding of cultural attitudes toward the dangers posed by the ever-present reality of nuclear weaponry"--Jacket.

In this "eloquent debut," a young Australian woman unable to find her footing in the world begins to break down when the emergencies she hears working as a 911 operator and the troubles within her own life gradually blur together, forcing her to grapple with how the past has shaped her present (Publishers Weekly). Drifting after her final year in college, a young writer begins working part-time as an emergency dispatch operator in Sydney. Over the course of an eight-hour shift, she is dropped into hundreds of crises, hearing only pieces of each. Callers report car accidents and violent spouses and homes caught up in flame. The work becomes monotonous: answer, transfer, repeat. And yet the stress of listening to far-off disasters seeps into her personal life, and she begins walking home with keys in hand, ready to fight off men disappointed by what they find in neighboring bars. During her free time, she gets black-out drunk, hooks up with strangers, and navigates an affair with an ex-lover whose girlfriend is in their circle of friends. Two centuries earlier, her great-great-great-great-grandfather--the British explorer John Oxley--traversed the wilderness of Australia in search of water. Oxley never found the inland sea, but the myth was taken up by other men, and over the years, search parties walked out into the desert, dying as they tried to find it. Interweaving a woman's self-destructive unraveling with the gradual worsening of the climate crisis, The Inland Sea is charged with unflinching insight into our age of anxiety. At a time when wildfires have swept an entire continent, this novel asks what refuge and comfort looks like in a constant state of emergency.
