The island of Cyprus has been bitterly divided for more than four decades. One of the most divisive elements of the Cyprus conflict is the writing of its history, a history called on by both communities to justify and explain their own notions of justice. Cyprus is one of the world's most intractable problems and one of large contemporary signficance. For it is a conflict of culturally distinct communities which lived together for centuries, first under Ottoman, and then British, rule until 1960. This book explores the basic dynamics that shaped the Cyprus problem, with a focus on recent decades.
