This standardization handbook has been developed and is being maintained as a joint effort of the Department of Defense and the Federal Aviation Administration. It provides guidelines and material properties for organic polymer and metal matrix composite materials. It provides a standard source of statistically-based mechanical property data for current and emerging composite materials, including aramid, glass, boron, alumina, silicon carbide, and quartz fiber composites..

The second volume of this six-volume compendium contains statistically-based data for polymer matrix composites that meets specific CMH-17 population sampling and data documentation requirements, covering material systems of general interest. Selected historical data from previous versions of the handbook that do not meet current data sampling, test methodology, or documentation requirements, but that still are of potential interest to industry are also included in this volume. The Composite Materials Handbook, referred to by industry groups as CMH-17, is a six-volume engineering reference tool that contains over 1,000 records of the latest test data for polymer matrix, metal matrix, ceramic matrix, and structural sandwich composites. CMH-17 provides information and guidance necessary to design and fabricate end items from composite materials. It includes properties of composite materials that meet specific data requirements as well as guidelines for design, analysis, material selection, manufacturing, quality control, and repair. The primary purpose of the handbook is to standardize engineering methodologies related to testing, data reduction, and reporting of property data for current and emerging composite materials. It is used by engineers worldwide in designing and fabricating products made from composite materials.

An updated revision ("Rev. H") of the second volume of the CMH-17 compendium contains statistically-based data for polymer matrix composites that meets specific CMH-17 population sampling and data documentation requirements, covering material systems of general interest. Selected historical data from previous versions of the handbook that do not meet current data sampling, test methodology, or documentation requirements, but are still of potential interest to industry are also included in this volume. Seventeen new data sets with complete documentation and publicly available specifications were added in the new Revision H of the Composites Materials Handbook, Vol.2. The new data sets include carbon fiber and glass fiber composites. The Composite Materials Handbook, CMH-17, is a six-volume engineering reference tool that contains over 1,000 records of the latest test data for polymer matrix, metal matrix, ceramic matrix, and structural sandwich composites. CMH-17 provides information and guidance necessary to design and fabricate end items from composite materials. While most books on composites approach the subject from a very technical standpoint, Beginning Composites presents practical, hands-on information about these versatile materials. From explanations of what a composite is, to demonstrations on how to actually utilize them in various projects, this book provides a simple, concise perspective on molding and finishing techniques to empower even the most apprehensive beginner. Topics include: What is a composite, why use composites, general composite types and where composites are typically used. Composite Materials Fabrication Handbook includes shop set up, design and a number of hands-on start-to-finish projects documented with abundant photographs. Surface sanding and finishing makes up an entire chapter, ensuring that the parts you manufacture are not only light and extremely strong, but also good looking as well.
