The provision of water supply and sanitation services is particularly vulnerable to projected changes in climate conditions (temperature and precipitation among others), in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, as well as and in the projected rise in sea-level and the intensification of storm surges. The process of climate proofing investment projects aims both at assessing the climate risk to a project's future costs and benefits, and undertaking a technical and economic analysis of options to alleviate or mitigate those risks. Accounting for climate change at the outset of the project cycle implies that decisions about project design, and the adoption and timing of climate-proofing measures be informed with the possible impacts of climate change in the initial phases of the project cycle so that decisions of an irreversible nature will be avoided. This publication presents a step-by-step methodological approach to assist project teams in managing climate change risk in the context of water supply and sanitation investment projects.

Climate Change, Water Supply and Sanitation: Risk Assessment, Management, Mitigation and Reduction pulls together the final outcomes and recommendations from the PREPARED project that originated from the WSSTP (Water Supply and Sanitation Technology Platform) thematic working group Sustainable Water Management in Urban areas. The PREPARED project confirms and demonstrates the technological preparedness of water supply and sanitation systems of ten cities in Europe and also Melbourne and Seattle to adapt to the expected impacts of climate change. It shows that the water supply and sanitation systems of cities and their catchments can adapt and be resilient to the challenges of climate change; and that the technological, managerial and policy adaptation of these PREPARED cities can be cost effective, carbon efficient and exportable to other urban areas within Europe and the rest of the world. The book: addresses issues related to the management of water, waste water and storm water that are impacted by climate change both in quantitative and qualitative aspects; addresses many of the Pan-European problems and optimises tests and implements adaptive solutions that contribute towards an integrated and coordinated approach; develops adaptation strategies, considering and weighting the mitigation side of solutions to minimise our carbon- and water footprint; improves resilience to deal with the impact of climate change; and contributes to the development of the knowledge base where it concerns the water supply and sanitation sector. The United Nations World Water Development Report, published every three years, is a comprehensive review providing an authoritative picture of the state of the world's freshwater resources. It offers best practices as well as in-depth theoretical analyses to help stimulate ideas and actions for better stewardship in the water sector. It is the only report of its kind, resulting from the collaboration and contributions of the 26 UN agencies, commissions, program, funds, secretariats and conventions that have a significant role in addressing global water concerns.The news media are full of talk of crises - in climate change, energy and food and troubled financial markets. These crises are linked to each other and to water resources management. Unresolved, they may lead to increasing political insecurity and conflict.Water is required to meet our fundamental needs and rising living standards and to sustain our planets fragile ecosystems. The 2020 edition of the WWDR, titled 'Water and Climate Change' illustrates the critical linkages between water and climate change in the context of the broader sustainable development agenda. Supported by examples from across the world, it describes both the challenges and opportunities created by climate change, and provides potential responses - in terms of adaptation, mitigation and improved resilience - that can be undertaken by enhancing water resources management, attenuating water-related risks, and improving access to water supply and sanitation services for all in a sustainable manner. It addresses the interrelations between water, people, environment and economics in a changing climate, demonstrating how climate change can be a positive catalyst for improved water management, governance and financing to achieve a sustainable and prosperous world for all. The report provides a fact-based, water-focused contribution to the knowledge base on climate change. It is complementary to existing scientific assessments and designed to support international political frameworks, with the goals of helping the water community tackle the challenges of climate change, and informing the climate change community about the opportunities that improved water management offers in terms of adaptation and mitigation.

National and global security can be assessed in many ways but one underlying factor for all humanity is access to reliable sources of water for drinking, sanitation, food production and manufacturing industry. In many parts of the world, population growth and an escalating demand for water already threaten the sustainable management of available water supplies. Global warming, climate change and rising sea level are expected to intensify the resource sustainability issue in many water-stressed regions of the world by reducing the annual supply of renewable fresh water and promoting the intrusion of saline water into aquifers along sea coasts, where 50% of the global population reside. Pro-active resource management decisions are required, but such efforts would be futile unless reliable predictions can be made about the impact of the changing global conditions on the water cycle and the quality and availability of critical water reserves.
