Since 1989, only three African nations - Namibia, Eritrea, and South Sudan - have joined the UN after enduring prolonged and violent struggles for independence. In a world characterized by constant change, border alterations typically require armed conflicts in postcolonial Africa. In response to this disconcerting trend, the book offers pragmatic blueprints for achieving peace, emphasizing constitutional approaches to navigate the delicate balance between sovereignty and self-determination. The work delves into the complexities of five self-determination struggles spanning three African countries, providing valuable insights into the challenges faced. It distils six critical lessons from these case studies and presents fourteen blueprint proposals tailored to address the unique dynamics of postcolonial Africa, where reconciling sovereignty and self-determination remains a pressing concern.

From the historical perspective, the Cold War can be regarded as an extension and continuation of colonialism via different means. The tools and methods that the superpowers, as well as local allies used, were in many ways similar to those desired during the last stage of European colonialism: gigantic economic and social projects, the promises of progress and modernization to the supporters, and almost death to the opponents or those who dare to step on the way of progress. The tragedy of the history of the Cold War in general and of the Cold War in the countries of the Third World, in particular, showed that two historical projects were originally anti-colonial, however, at last, they became the part of significantly older domination patter, due to intensity and severity of the confrontation, as well as the high stakes they considered were involved and practically apocalyptic fear of the situation when the opponent wins. In other words, even though both Soviet Union and the United States opposed colonialism and its reflections, they practically did the same in their own version of modernity, like their predecessors (for instance, France and Britain with their colonial projects of the 19th and 20th centuries). These methods were focused on implementing ecological, demographic, and cultural change in the societies of the Third World while utilizing military power to defeat the states that dare to resist. A presentation of scholarly work that investigates Iran's experiences with colonialism and decolonization from a variety of perspectives. How did Iran’s unique position in the world affect and define its treatment of decolonization? During the final decades of Pahlavi rule in the late 1970s, the country sought to establish close relationships with newly independent counterparts in the Global South. Most scholarly work focused on this period is centered around the Cold War and Iran's relations with the United States, Russia, and Europe. Little attention has been paid to how the country interacted with other regions, such as Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Adding to an important and growing body of literature that discusses the profound and lasting impact of decolonization, Iran and Global Decolonisation contributes to the theoretical debates around the re-shaping of the world brought about by the end of an empire. It considers not only the impact of global decolonization on movements and ideas within Iran but also how Iran’s own experiences of imperialism shaped how these ideas were received and developed.

During the final fifteen years of the Cold War, southern Africa underwent a period of upheaval, with dramatic twists and turns in relations between the superpowers. Americans, Cubans, Soviets, and Africans fought over the future of Angola, where tens of thousands of Cuban soldiers were stationed, and over the decolonization of Namibia, Africa's last colony. Beyond lay the great prize: South Africa. Piero Gleijeses uses archival sources, particularly from the United States, South Africa, and the closed Cuban archives, to provide an unprecedented international history of this important theater of the late Cold War. These sources all point to one conclusion: by humiliating the United States and defying the Soviet Union, Fidel Castro changed the course of history in southern Africa. It was Cuba's victory in Angola in 1988 that forced Pretoria to set Namibia free and helped break the back of apartheid South Africa.
