Looking through the lens of black business history, Beauty Shop Politics shows how black beauticians in the Jim Crow era parlayed their economic independence and access to a public community space into platforms for activism. Tiffany M. Gill argues that the beauty industry played a crucial role in the creation of the modern black female identity and that the seemingly frivolous space of a beauty salon actually has stimulated social, political, and economic change. From the founding of the National Negro Business League in 1900 and onward, African Americans have embraced the entrepreneurial spirit by starting their own businesses, but black women's forays into the business world were overshadowed by those of black men. Black Lives and Spatial Matters is a call to reconsider the epistemic violence that is committed when scholars, policymakers, and the general public continue to frame Black precarity as just another racial, cultural, or ethnic conflict that can be solved solely through legal, political, or economic means. Jodi Rios argues that the historical and material production of blackness-as-risk is foundational to the historical and material construction of our society and certainly foundational to the construction and experience of metropolitan space. She also considers how an ethics of lived blackness—living fully and visibly in the face of forces intended to dehumanize and erase—can create a powerful counter point to blackness-as-risk. In this book, I talk about my life experience as a farmworker, a veteran of the United States Navy, a businessman, and a promise that I made to my mother before she passed away in 1983 due to breast cancer. Living in the diaspora, many of Haitian descent do not know much about Haiti's unique history. Therefore, I also provide my opinion on Haitian history and how the Haitians in the diaspora and those in Haiti could work together to change Haiti for the better. As people of African descent, we must know our heritage to understand better who we are and what we need to do to strengthen our global presence. We are scattered all over the planet, but we are very weak on many fronts. So, I talk about our mistakes and what we need to do to elevate ourselves to a new echelon on the world stage. Furthermore, I provide my opinion about some of the United Nations' unfortunate deployments in Black countries that have caused many problems. As a Haitian-American, I also talk about the United States' massive division that poses a threat to our national security and what we may have to do to change the negative development facing the United States of America.
