This book constitutes three challenges that were held in conjunction with the 24th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention, MICCAI 2021, which was planned to take place in Strasbourg, France but changed to an online event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The peer-reviewed 18 long and 9 short papers included in this volume stem from the following three biomedical image analysis challenges: Mitosis Domain Generalization Challenge (MIDOG 2021), Medical Out-of-Distribution Analysis Challenge (MOOD 2021), and Learn2Reg (L2R 2021). The challenges share the need for developing and fairly evaluating algorithms that increase accuracy, reproducibility and efficiency of automated image analysis in clinically relevant applications.

Annotation Biomedical Image Analysis: Tracking addresses methods for extracting image information from biological/medical images for use in tracking biological targets. Here, and in the forthcoming companion Biomedical Image Analysis: Segmentation (Morgan & Claypool, ISBN: 1598290207), the authors concentrate on aspects of image analysis rather than the modalities or the imaging process itself. This lecture will be a valuable resource for graduate students, faculty, and industrial/governmental researchers interested in applications of imaging, or more specifically, biomedical imaging. It is written from first principles and will be accessible to a broad readership. Key Features:?Methods for tracking using active contours, together with a discussion of selection of parameters and weights? Methods for implementing snakes by way of dynamic programming?Probabilistic methods for tracking, with a description of the Kalman filter?Coverage of factored sampling and Monte Carlo methods, including the newly emerging particle filter?A summary of important new advances in target tracking, including multi-target tracking techniquesDescription of shape-based methods for biomedical image analysis.

The 2nd International Workshop on Biomedical Image Registration (WBIR) was held June 23–24, 2003, at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. Following the success of the ?rst workshop in Bled, Slovenia, this meeting aimed to once again bring together leading researchers in the area of biomedical image registration to present and discuss recent developments in the ?eld. Thetheory, implementationandapplicationofimageregistrationinmedicine have become major themes in nearly every scienti?c forum dedicated to image processingandanalysis. Indeed,thete- niques have enabled some of the most exciting contemporary developments in the clinical and research application of medical imaging, including fusion of m- timodality data to assist clinical interpretation; change detection in longitudinal studies; brain shift modeling to improve anatomic localization in neurosurgical procedures; cardiac motion quanti?cation; construction of probabilistic atlases of organ structure and function; and large-scale phenotyping in animal models. WBIR was conceived to provide the burgeoning community of investigators in biomedical image registration an opportunity to share, discuss and stimulate developments in registration research and application at a meeting exclusively devoted to the topic. The format of this year’s workshop consisted of invited talks, author presentations and ample opportunities for discussion, the latter including an elegant reception and dinner hosted at the Mutter ̈ Museum. A representation of the best work in the ?eld, selected by peer review from full manuscripts,waspresentedinsingle-tracksessions. Thepapers, whichaddressed the full diversity of registration topics, are reproduced in this volume, along with enlightening essays by some of the invited speakers.

Medical Image Analysis presents practical knowledge on medical image computing and analysis as written by top educators and experts. This text is a modern, practical, self-contained reference that conveys a mix of fundamental methodological concepts within different medical domains. Sections cover core representations and properties of digital images and image enhancement techniques, advanced image computing methods (including segmentation, registration, motion and shape analysis), machine learning, how medical image computing (MIC) is used in clinical and medical research, and how to identify alternative strategies and employ software tools to solve typical problems in MIC. Provides an authoritative description of key concepts and methods Includes tutorial-based sections that clearly explain principles and their application to different medical domains Presents a representative selection of topics to match a modern and relevant approach to medical image computing
