Data management, knowledge discovery, and knowledge processing are core and hot topics in computer science. They are widely accepted as enabling technologies for modern enterprises, enhancing their performance and their decision making processes. Since the 1990s the Internet has been the outstanding driving force for application development in all domains. An increase in the demand for resource sharing (e. g. , computing resources, s- vices, metadata, data sources) across different sites connected through networks has led to an evolvement of data- and knowledge-management systems from centralized systems to decentralized systems enabling large-scale distributed applications prov- ing high scalability. Current decentralized systems still focus on data and knowledge as their main resource characterized by: heterogeneity of nodes, data, and knowledge autonomy of data and knowledge sources and services large-scale data volumes, high numbers of data sources, users, computing resources dynamicity of nodes These characteristics recognize: (i) limitations of methods and techniques developed for centralized systems (ii) requirements to extend or design new approaches and methods enhancing efficiency, dynamicity, and scalability (iii) development of large scale, experimental platforms and relevant benchmarks to evaluate and validate scaling Feasibility of these systems relies basically on P2P (peer-to-peer) techniques and agent systems supporting with scaling and decentralized control. Synergy between Grids, P2P systems and agent technologies is the key to data- and knowledge-centered systems in large-scale environments.

The Transactions on Computational Science journal is part of the Springer series Lecture Notes in Computer Science, and is devoted to the gamut of computational science issues, from theoretical aspects to application-dependent studies and the va- dation of emerging technologies. The current issue is devoted to computer systems research and the application of such research, which naturally complement each other. The issue is comprised of Part 1: Computational Visualization and Optimization, and Part 2: Computational Methods for Model Design and Analysis. Part 1 – Computational Visualization and Optimization – is devoted to state-of-the-art research carried out in this area with the use of novel computational methods. It is c- prised of five papers, each addressing a specific computational problem in the areas of shared virtual spaces, dynamic visualization, multimodal user interfaces, computational geometry, and parallel simulation, respectively. Part 2 – Computational Methods for Model Design and Analysis – continues the topic with an in-depth look at selected computational science research in the areas of data representation and analysis. The four papers comprising this part cover such areas as efficient reversible logic design, missing data analysis, stochastic computation and neural network representation for eccentric sphere models. Each paper describes a detailed experiment or a case study of the methodology presented to amplify the impact of the contribution.

RapidIO - The Embedded System Interconnect brings together one essential volume on RapidIO interconnect technology, providing a major reference work for the evaluation and understanding of RapidIO. Covering essential aspects of the specification, it also answers most usage questions from both hardware and software engineers. It will also serve as a companion text to the specifications when developing or working with the RapidIO interconnect technology. Including the history of RapidIO and case of studies of RapidIO deployment, this really is the definitive reference guide for this new area of technology.
