Charles C. McDougal lived in Asia for twenty years, including ten years in the Philippines from 1972 to 1982. His impeccable research stems from an academic background whose credentials include a bachelor of science degree from the University of Georgia, a master's degree from the Asian Institute of Management, and a doctorate in business from the University of the Philippines. The data he gathered for his doctoral dissertation was the genesis of his 1987 book "The Marcos File", which exposed the Marcos regime for its corruption and excesses. It was while working on a book about Marcos' hidden wealth that he stumbled on the story of a treasure hunt headed by Marcos. His close friendship with the national security director provided him access to the corridors of power. He was asked to find out the truth, both about the legendary treasure and the Marcos gold. A cave-in killed two of his men and overnight this top-secret operation made the front page of almost every major newspaper in the world.

This book provides a survey of literature by North American writers of Asian descent, both by national origins (Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, South Asian, Vietnamese) and by shared concerns. It introduces readers to the distinctive literary history of each group of writers and discusses issues that connect or divide these different groups. Part I provides a literary history of each constituent national group and underlines salient historical events that have affected its writing. Part II, addressing common racial issues such as nationalism, representation and crises of identity, explores the forces that bind, divide, and foster exchange between writers of diverse ethnic origins. The volume is intended to serve as both a guide and a reference work for scholars, teachers and students in Asian American studies, ethnic studies and American studies. Centring the Periphery: New Perspectives on Collecting East Asian Objects, edited by Nataša Vampelj Suhadolnik, explores East Asian collections in "peripheral" areas of Europe and North America and their relationship with the East Asian collections in former imperial and colonial centres. The authors not only present the stories of a number of less well-known individual objects and collections, but also discuss the evolution of fashions and tastes in East Asian objects in areas that were not centres of European colonial power, and the socioeconomic conditions in which they were collected. To date, research on the collecting of East Asian objects in the Euro-American region has focused primarily on larger collections and collectors. The stories from the periphery, however, deserve to be told.
