This book provides a detailed example of an eye-tracking method for comparing the reading experience of a literary source text readers with readers of a translation at stylistically marked points. Drawing on principles, methods and inspiration from fields including translation studies, cognitive psychology, and language and literary studies, the author proposes an empirical method to investigate the notion of stylistic foregrounding, with 'style' understood as the distinctive manner of expression in a particular text. The book employs Raymond Queneau’s Zazie dans le métro (1959) and its English translation Zazie in the Metro (1960) as a case study to demonstrate the proposed methods. Eyetracking has become a powerful tool in scientific research and has finally found its way into disciplines such as applied linguistics and translation studies, paving the way for new insights and challenges in these fields. The aim of the first International Conference on Eyetracking and Applied Linguistics (ICEAL) was to bring together researchers who use eyetracking to empirically answer their research questions. It was intended to bridge the gaps between applied linguistics, translation studies, cognitive science and computational linguistics on the one hand and to further encourage innovative research methodologies and data triangulation on the other hand. These challenges are also addressed in this proceedings volume: While the studies described in the volume deal with a wide range of topics, they all agree on eyetracking as an appropriate methodology in empirical research.

Eye tracking has become a fundamental and compelling research method in the investigation of human behaviour and cognition, including the investigation of the translation process and the examination of its products. This book brings together all of eye tracking studies in relation to translation studies. It examines the underlying assumptions, concepts, and measures, all of which are then linked to the established body of eye tracking research found in cognitive science, psychology, psycholinguistics, and human-computer interaction. It then elucidates how these often disconnected avenues of research inform the fundamental structure of our investigations of translation as a process and the examination of translation products themselves. Finally, it provides a critical perspective of this body of research in discussing methodological considerations and the future directions of eye tracking research in translation studies. In doing so it encourages new thinking about research in translation studies, highlights the immense potential of eye tracking to answer the unresolved and unarticulated questions of the discipline, and shapes its future directions.

This volume contains ten papers describing various reading and translation experiments using eye-tracking techniques (sometimes combined with other process tools such as keystroke and pause logging methodology). Copenhagen Studies in Language volumes 36 and 37 (Behind the Mind edited by Susanne Gopferich, Arnt Lykke Jakobsen and Inger M. This Element reports an investigation of translators' use of web-based resources and search engines. The study adopted a qualitative eye tracking-based methodology utilising a combination of gaze replay and retrospective think aloud (RTA) to elicit data. The main contribution of this Element lies in presenting not only an alternative eye tracking methodology for investigating translators' web search behaviour but also a systematic approach to gauging the reasoning behind translators' highly complex and context-dependent interaction with search engines and the Web.
