This Nordic Yearbook is a continuation of the series Social Changes and Adult Education Research first published in 1992, and subsequently yearly 1993-1999. The aim of these Nordic yearbooks is to present the most recent, on-going research into adult education in the Nordic countries to an international audience. A main focus of the fifteen articles presented here is on recent reforms and policy in the field of adult education. Included in the book are also articles on the life-story approach, management education, IT-effects on jobs, self-directed learning, Grundtvig's educational ideas and a scenario for life long learning. The book is a joint enterprise by institutions in the Nordic countries with one person from each country constituting the editorial staff.

The aim of the Nordic yearbook is to present research into adult education in the Nordic countries to an international audience. The main theme in this yearbook is learning in working life. Five out of ten articles focus on the challenges of the workplace as a learning environment, labour market training, learning opportunities in working life, ageing workers and the relationship between entrepreneurship and education. Three articles concern the development of adult education in general, addressing the historical perspective and the challenges for the future. Finally, readers are offered a critical discussion of much-disputed forms of knowledge and a conceptual approach to mapping political education.
