A unique book from the 1859 raid on Harper's Ferry, this firsthand account of the only black combatant to survive the raid details the story of this turning point in the struggle against slavery and refutes the notion that African American people did take on the cause for their freedom.

Osborne Perry Anderson was an African-American abolitionist and the only surviving African-American member of John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry. After the failed raid, Anderson wrote this 1861 account of the events. Anderson describes the military-style training initiated by Brown, the supplies collected for the endeavor and the events of the raid itself. During the Civil War, Anderson served as a noncommissioned officer of the Union Army.
