Since the time that the missionary Mr. Hartley's two motherless boys had arrived under the lady's hospitable roof, she had, till this year, rarely been parted from either of them even for a day. Their joys and sorrows were hers; and to train her three children for heaven had been Lady Laurie's dearest object on earth. The year preceding that on which my story opens had been one of strong lights and shadows to the Hartleys. Then had occurred the fearful Mutiny of 1857, to which their only remaining parent had all but fallen a victim, even his death having been (though falsely) reported. To this sorrow had succeeded the great joy of Mr. Hartley's unexpected return to his native country.
