Excerpt from Saint Peter and the First Years of Christianity It is true that he has been suspected of accommodating his history to his own views, thereby making it a plea for his own party. According to this supposition, the Church was then divided into two factions: on one side were Peter and the J udaizers, stubbornly fighting for the legal Observances; on the other the adherents of Paul, just as zealous to throw off the yoke. Luke, so they say, set about conciliating his brethren, trying to persuade them that under apparent dis agreements they had but one heart and one soul; every incident which does not exactly support this notion they either suppress or disfigure. The sequel of our narrative will show what weight is to be accorded to these fantasies; but in a word, it is easy to reply here that the Author of the Acts, far from concealing the dissensions in the Church, does, on the contrary, depict very strikingly their numerous feat ures. It is he who best exhibits these divisions of sentiment, who details their origin and their developments. Excerpt from The Footsteps of St. Peter: Being the Life and Times of the Apostle A liberty of a more personal kind scarcely requires apology. In one or two of the earlier chapters, the Writer has ventured to transfer, but always either in an abridged or expanded form, descriptive extracts from some of his own former Volumes, especially in connection with events associated with the Sea of Galilee. These might indeed have been entirely recast, but it is with an Author as with an Artist, the freshness and vigour of a first sketch is often lost by reproduction. These studies have been very interesting to myself, and I send them out in the hope that, by God's blessing, they may be helpful to Others also, and open their eyes to see some new beauty and. Excerpt from Scenes in the Life of St. Peter: Sometime a Fisherman of Galilee, Afterwards an Apostle of Christ; A Course of Lectures The Lectures contained in this little volume were delivered by the Author, in the ordinary course of his ministry, to a week-night congregation, and without the most distant reference to publication. And he would not have yielded to the request of his friends to publish them, but that he had reason to believe they had proved interesting and edifying to his hearers; and he hoped they might, by the blessing of God, prove equally so to the readers. Excerpt from Pictures of St. Peter in an English Home Harold and Robin Hartley were the adopted sons of the widowed Lady Laurie, and as dear to her heart as was her only daughter Ida. Since the time that the missionary Mr. Hartley's two motherless boys had arrived under the lady's hospitable roof, she had, till this year, rarely been parted from either of them even for a day. Their joys and sorrows were hers; and to train her three children for heaven had been Lady Laurie's dearest object on earth. The year preceding that on which my story opens had been one of strong lights and shadows to the Hartleys. Then had occurred the fearful Mutiny of 1857, to which their only remaining parent had all but fallen a victim, even his death having been (though falsely) reported. To this sorrow had succeeded the great joy of Mr. Hartley's unexpected return to his native country. But the missionary had remained but six months in England to recruit his broken health he was so intensely anxious to return to his little native flock, whom he had been compelled to leave without any earthly shepherd in a time of confusion and danger, that nothing could persuade Mr. Hartley to remain away from the land where he had nearly lost his life. One care had been removed from the missionary's mind before he left. Mr. Hartley's elder son, Harold. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
