We tend to avoid talking about the things that make us uncomfortable. Suicide is one of those things. So many of us feel it's a conversation that's too much for kids to handle, but lack of information doesn't help either. We hope this book will help you open up honest conversation with the kids in your life and begin to provide a foundation to equip them with a better understanding of the feelings, emotions, and thoughts about it as they grow up.

A picture book geared to help parents and counselors communicate with young children about a parent’s suicide. Oliver’s daddy loved him—a whole bunch, forever and for always. One day Oliver’s daddy died by suicide. Why? Oliver’s mommy hugs him tight, and she tells him why. And she reassures Oliver that his daddy loved him—and that will never change. In developmentally appropriate language and evocative illustrations, this picture book helps open communication about why a parent completes suicide. Support for Parents Whose Children are Depressed Contrary to popular belief, young children do get seriously depressed, and many try to kill themselves. In Helping Your Child Cope with Depression and Suicidal Thoughts the authors, Shamoo and Patros, show parents: how to learn to talk, listen, and communicate effectively with a depressed child; what situations can cause a child or adolescent to wish to commit suicide; what signs to watch for; myths and misinformation about suicide; how to determine the risk of suicide; and How to intervene.

When Robin and Jasper's Dad died by suicide in 2014 they couldn't find many books to help them with their grief, so a few years later they decided to write their own. This book is written from their perspective and aims to help other children who might be in similar situations. The book takes children through their journey, helping them to validate their own experiences, discuss their own experiences and process their own feelings. This book takes the reader on a journey through the many changes that Robin and Jasper faced, and the challenges that were unique to each them. They discuss the changes that took place as a result of their loss - for example moving home and losing friends. It talks about feelings of sadness, but also how Mum supported the two siblings. It explores memories, and how life changed overnight. Robin was six years old when their Dad died, and Jasper was three years old. They processed the death in different ways but, with their Mum, they found ways to move forward and cherish the memories of their Dad. Some of the artwork has been contributed by the children, other pieces are from members of our local community, and some of the images are family photographs. We were very lucky to have had members of Child Bereavement UK look over and comment on the book content, and will be donating a minimum of 50% of any profit to Child Bereavement UK - a charity that has helped our family tremendously over the years.

It is a beautiful spring day, and Luna is having a picnic in the park with her family, wearing her Mum's red hat. Luna's Mum died one year ago and she still finds it difficult to understand why. She feels that it may have been her fault and worries that her Dad might leave her in the same way. Suicide always causes shock, not just for the family members but for everyone around them, and children also have to deal with these feelings. The book approaches the subject sensitively and includes a guide for parents and professionals by bereavement expert, Dr Riet Fiddelaers-Jaspers. It will be of interest to anyone working with, or caring for, children bereaved by suicide, including bereavement counsellors, social workers and school staff, as well as parents, carers and other family members.
