This report presents the research initiative to explore an alternative methodology for extrapolating purchasing power parities (PPPs) for 21 participating economies in the Asia and Pacific region. The 2009 PPP Update provides an intermediate benchmark and more firmly based real expenditures and price level indexes for 2009 than would have been possible using the conventional extrapolation technique. The results include PPP-based gross domestic product and its major aggregates of actual final consumption; collective consumption expenditure by general government; gross fixed capital formation; changes in inventories and net acquisitions of valuables; and, balance of exports and imports.

This publication provides a standard compilation of supply and use tables (SUTs) for 19 economies in Asia and the Pacific to help them comply with the United Nations 2008 System of National Accounts (SNA) recommendations. SUTs are an integrated statistical estimation and economic analysis model that facilitates the compilation of more reliable, consistent, and internationally comparable estimates of key economic statistics such as gross domestic product. The improved and more detailed statistics are expected to provide a better basis for measuring economic output and growth; facilitating informed policy making; and monitoring progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), relating especially to poverty alleviation, economic growth, technological progress, and industrial and infrastructure development. The compilation of SUTs is an essential first step to establish an effective statistical system in any economy. In 2014, ADB embarked on a data development and capacity building project to assist 19 members construct benchmark SUTs for the latest possible year. This publication outlines the relevant statistical and economic concepts, data compilation and development practices, project implementation strategies, and the results of the project. It also includes an abridged version of the SUTs of the 19 participating economies. The more detailed tables are available online through the ADB website.

This publication presents the methodology and results of research on a cost-effective approach for estimating purchasing power parities (PPPs). The study drew on price and national accounts data from 20 economies in Asia and the Pacific. It used a “reduced information” approach to generate more firmly based estimates of PPPs, price level indexes, and measures of real (PPP-based) expenditures than conventional extrapolation methods would obtain. The results include PPP-based gross domestic product and its major aggregates of individual consumption expenditure by households and nonprofit institutions serving households, government final consumption expenditure, gross fixed capital formation, changes in inventories and acquisitions less disposals of valuables, and balance of exports and imports.

This publication provides updated statistics on a comprehensive set of economic, financial, social, and environmental measures as well as select indicators for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The report covers the 49 regional members of ADB. It discusses trends in development progress and the challenges to achieving inclusive and sustainable economic growth across Asia and the Pacific. This 52nd edition discusses how the COVID-19 pandemic has intensified the challenges of meeting development targets, which needed urgent attention even before the global health crisis began. To put into practice the "leave no one behind" principle of the SDGs, the availability of more detailed and informative data is crucial. With the pandemic intensifying society's reliance on digital platforms for remote working and learning, as well as for shopping and entertainment, the 2021 report features a special supplement, Capturing the Digital Economy: A Proposed Measurement Framework and Its Applications, which is rooted in input-output analysis and uses readily available national accounts data. The study provides a sound basis on which to assess the relative importance of the digital economy in national and global production processes.

This publication provides a comprehensive account of the 2017 International Comparison Program (ICP) cycle for 22 economies in Asia and the Pacific. It provides in-depth analyses of estimates of purchasing power parities (PPPs), total and per capita real (PPP-converted) gross domestic product and its component expenditures, and price level indexes showing relative costs of living. The PPPs enable comparison in real terms across economies by removing the price level differences among them. This report also presents in detail the conceptual framework and methodological approaches used in implementing the ICP.
