In this hardbound edition of Tom's 16th adventure in this series, he finds out that a newly classified exo-planet outside Pluto's orbit is about to have a close encounter with the return of Haley's Comet. The problem is that at such distances nobody can tell just how close. A visit to the Planet, Eris, is called for but he must first devise a ay to travel faster than he ever has before so the trip can be accomplished before the pass by. What he comes up with astounds even his father, and that takes a lot! Tom, Bud and their crew arrive in time to witness a catastrophic collision that begins the slow and inevitable break up of the planet. But, trouble is brewing as calculations show some of the debris will eventually drift in and possibly collide with Mars and the Earth. What to do? Nobody has ever tried to put an entire planet back together. This is a Humpty Dumpty exercise of planetary proportions.

Book 16 in this new series sees the young inventor presented with a problem that may or may not happen in a locale so far away it could be meaningless. Or, it could turn deadly! Haley's Comet is swinging back in for its next appearance, only this time it will pass very close to a newly identified planet far outside the orbit of Pluto. Eris is larger than Pluto and even possesses a small moon. So, with the possibility that Eris could influence Haley's trajectory, and if it goes one way it will come too close to the Earth on its pass in a few years, Tom must find a way to get out that far, and fairly quickly. His solution. Simple. Harness a black hole, ride it out past the edge of the solar system and see what happens. Only themission becomes much more diffecult when Haley's smashes into Eris and the planet begins to break up. Now, there will be far more potential deadly pieces of the former planet to deal with unless Tom and his crew can find a way to rebuild it.

In this hardbound edition of novel 23 in this series, Tom must travel to Mars to find out just why the small moon, Phobos, has suddenly begun coming close to the surface. In fact it is coming down to lower and lower orbits that could, within months, endanger the colonists on the planet below. He first tries to use brute force and to push it back into higher orbit, but nearly loses several spacecraft in the attempt. So, he now is faced with finding out the why of it all before he can find a solution that won't mean simply destroying the moon. That, he fears, might backfire and do damage to the colony and the planet. He tries to find some answers with the aid of his Space Friends, but they seem to have disappeared from his life. Without their help he mounts an expedition of Phobos and finds about the last thing he might think of. Now it is a race against time to see if he can rectify the situation and re-place Phobos in its correct orbit.
