She turned every childhood vacation into a pilgrimage, purposely inserting religious sites into the family’s journey to places such as Niagara Falls, Washington, DC, or Myrtle Beach. Catholics have been part of the American experiment since the beginning—in founding the colonies and expanding the west, building education and health care systems, abolishing slavery, fighting on the front lines, and advancing science, technology, and space exploration. Each of the twenty-seven sites on Schmiesing’s virtual itinerary—including, the Washington Monument, Wounded Knee Creek, the University of Notre Dame, and Mission San Diego de Alcalá—transports you to a significant time in US history and connects the dots to our Catholic heritage. Fifty-seven Irish immigrant laborers arrived in the port of Philadelphia in June 1832 to work on Pennsylvania's Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad. They all perished within six weeks. Contractor Philip Duffy hired them to work a stretch of track in rural Chester County known as Duffy's Cut. For more than 180 years, the railroad maintained that cholera was to blame and kept the historical record under lock and key. In a harrowing modern-day excavation of their mass grave, a group of academics and volunteers found evidence some of the laborers were murdered. Authors and research leaders Dr. William E. French Jesuit missionary, Father Sebastien Rale S.J. (1657-1724) arrived in Quebec, Canada. He quickly learned the native languages and started his dictionary for his school at his assignment in Maine among the Wabanaki people of the Norridgewock Tribe. He constructed a Church and the first school at the tribal home near the Kennebec River. The people quickly learned English and were able to read and understand the English way of handling treaties. More of their land was being taken for the natural forests, trees, wildlife and seafood. Shipbuilding along the coasts produced ships for England. The Massachusetts Bay Colony wanted Father Rale out of their way, so attacks happened several times. With a bounty of silver on his head, Father Rale and his people were attacked by the English soldiers. During the final attack resulting in the death of many tribal families, Father Rale was massacred on August 23, 1724.
