To fanciful minds and theoretical speculators, the so-called ""science"" of modern astronomy furnishes a field, unsurpassed in any science for the unrestrained license of the imagination, and the building up of a complicated conjuration of absurdities such as to overawe the simpleton and make him gape with wonder; to deceive even those who truly believe their assumptions to be facts, and to ""make men doubt Divine Revelation with as little discrimination as they were formerly called upon to believe,"" If the reader will carefully follow and weigh the evidence in the following chapters, he cannot fail to be delivered from the thraldom of popular credulity and led to seek the truth himself.

Thomas Winship presents forty-one distinct arguments in support of the flat earth theory and the associated Zetetic astronomy. This book began life as a shorter pamphlet. It was only after significant popular interest that Mr. Winship decided to expand Zetetic Cosmogony into a lengthy, encompassing book. Drawing upon observations made by those working in science and the naval professions, Winship presents a series of points with the intention of verifying and proving that the earth is a flat plane rather than an oblate spheroid. Quoting dozens of distinct works and sources, the author is lively and passionate in advancing each of his points, voicing disdain for conventional astronomers as he goes. To some extent this book can be considered a summation of the Flat Earth Society's years of work to convince the world's scientific community and public. We encounter explanations of phenomena such as circumnavigation, oddities observed by sailors, the motions of the sun, moon and stars and even the construction of long-distance railways. The appendices include a number of testimonials, short essays plus poetry written by advocates of the flat earth theory.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1899 edition. Excerpt: ... the glory of god. The inspired Psalmist says that "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shovvelh his handiwork "; therefore, whatever some professed Christians affirm to the contrary, the subject of Creation is connected with right views of God, His worship, and His glory, l'ut if we would have a right conception of God, and His glory, we must see to it that we have a right conception of His works in Creation. How, for instance, do we obtain an insight into the character of any great man, whether he be a poet, politician, sculptor, general or king? Is it not by his acts, or his works? But suppose these acts, or works, are misrepresented to us, or defaced by someone, should we not have false and distorted views respecting the author, artist, or the maker of those things? Assuredly. And so it comes to pass in respect to the construction of the world, false views of the universe have led men into a misconception respecting the character of God, and even alas! in many cases to a denial of the very existence of such a personal Being. Let us, then, endeavour to come back to first principles. The world exists, and must have come from somewhere. It is "unthinkable " to say it came by chance, or any "fortuitous concourse of atoms." Its wonderful variety, the general co-relation and adaptibility of its various parts, and the exact and never-failing motions of all the heavenly bodies, prove, to any well-balanced and unprejudiced mind, that some grand and controlling intelligence directs and rules over all. As the apostle Paul declares, "The invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead: so that they are without excuse...".

2017 Reprint of 1899 Second Edition. Modern flat Earth hypotheses originated with the English writer Samuel Rowbotham (1816-1884). Based on conclusions derived from the Bedford Level experiment, Rowbotham published Zetetic Astronomy. He later expanded into a book Earth Not a Globe, proposing the Earth is a flat disc centered at the North Pole and bounded along its southern edge by a wall of ice, Antarctica, with the Sun and Moon 3,000 miles and the "cosmos" 3,100 miles above Earth. He also published a leaflet titled "The Inconsistency of Modern Astronomy and its Opposition to the Scriptures!!," which argued that the Bible, alongside our senses, supported the idea that the earth was flat and immovable and this essential truth should not be set aside for a system based solely on human conjecture. Rowbotham and followers like T. Winship [Rectangle] gained attention in debates with leading scientists such as Alfred Russel Wallace. Rowbotham created a Zetetic Society in England and New York, shipping over a thousand copies of Zetetic Astronomy.
