In some circles there is an attitude that academic research consists of two distinct activities. The first of these is the execution of the research activities themselves and the second is writing it up in such a way that it may be presented either for a degree or for publication in a scholarly journal. This is an archaic attitude towards conducting academic research in the 21st century. The writing up of research is an integral part of the research itself, which should begin at the outset of the research activity. It is increasingly appreciated that the writing of ideas is a major contributor to their proper understanding. Leaving the writing until the end does not only lead to an accumulation of tiresome work but actually detracts from the learning available to the researcher through the research experience. This book addresses these issues as well as explaining what the requirements are to produce a readily acceptable research dissertation. Readers of this book have my best wishes in achieving their objectives through their work with academic research.

What is good academic writing? How should I present my written work? How can I improve my written work? Academic writing can be a daunting prospect for new undergraduates and postgraduates alike, regardless of whether they are home or overseas students. This accessible book provides them/students with all they need to know to produce excellent written work. Based on their many years of experience, the authors have structured the book so as to build students’ confidence in their own writing ability whilst at the same time respecting conventional ideas of what is, and what is not, acceptable in the academic domain. To reinforce student learning, the material is presented using a wealth of clear examples, hands-on tasks with answers, and logical sequences that build on earlier chapters. The first two sections of the book address the preparation and writing of assignments and research projects, while the third provides a useful toolkit containing reference materials on areas including punctuation, grammar and academic terminology. The book includes numerous tips and insights and comprehensively covers issues such as: Reading around a new topic The need for coherence and how to achieve it Structure and organisation Plagiarism, quoting and citing sources The main sections of a typical research project Writing style Finding your own voice Examiner expectations

This new edition of the popular Quick Guide to Writing up your Research has added sections on data management, writing with rigor, common errors in written English and more. There are always challenges in writing up your research. Sometimes the problem is to do with the process of the actual writing itself and other times it concerns how to ensure that all the aspects of the research which have to be mentioned in a research dissertation are included in the right place and to an appropriate level. If this is addressed appropriately, writing up can be accomplished relatively easily, but if it isn’t managed well writing up can become a burdensome event. Having a high level overview of what is required when writing up your research is one of the ways of making this job, which many researchers find daunting and arduous, much easier. This book is in four parts: Writing; the Body of the Dissertation; the Leading Pages; and the Appendices. This book contains the information you need to write up a research dissertation or thesis and how to go about producing this work in a controlled and satisfying way.
