This book attempts to provide an account of each kind of plant that has been placed on the federal list of endangered and threatened species, as well as those that have gone through the listing process except for the final listing. In addition, nearly sixty plants in the United States that are rare and are being reviewed by the United States Fish and Wildlife service are described in this book. Following an initial chapter that discusses one of this nation's extinct plants and the efforts now being made to prevent further extinction, there are seven chapters based on geographical regions in this country that include the discussions of the endangered and threatened plants. Those plants which have already been listed by the federal government are given first in each chapter, followed by those currently under review.

You'll find them throughout the year in Houston—lyre-leaf sage, Drummond skullcap, silver-leaf nightshade, snow-on-the-prairie, lemon beebalm, scarlet pimpernel, plains wild indigo, spring ladies'-tresses, deer pea vetch. These wildflowers and hundreds of other species flourish in this part of Texas, but until this book was published in 1993 no guide had focused exclusively on the Houston area. John and Gloria Tveten spent years seeking out both the common and the rare flowers. They describe here more than 200 plants. A color photograph of each one will make identification easy. The guide is arranged by color, with each entry tracing the history and lore of a species. Many plants—for example, prairie Indian plantain and self-heal—were used by Native Americans for medicinal purposes. Others, like poke-weed and wapato, are edible. Southern dewberry and giant ragweed are used as natural dyes. And some, like rattlebush and milkweed, are poisonous. At the end of each species account is a list of key identifying characteristics for quick reference in the field. Summaries of plant families are also included, as well as tips on where and when to look for wildflowers.

This second edition updates the status of Illinois grasses. The book features 263 figures from the first edition plus 21 new figures for this edition by Paul W. Nelson. An illustrated guidebook that describes forty-nine natural places in Pennsylvania to explore and enjoy. In this sequel to the popular guidebook Outbound Journeys in Pennsylvania, Marcia Bonta describes forty-nine new outstanding natural places in Pennsylvania, featuring their old-growth forests, scenic rivers, spectacular waterfalls, rare botanical localities, outstanding wetlands, unique geological formations, endangered ecosystems, and special birdwatching areas. The book is divided into three sections--Eastern, Central, and Western Pennsylvania--and covers unique natural features in state parks, state forests, private nature sanctuaries, state game lands, county parks, environmental education centers, and a National Military Park. Each chapter discusses the flora and fauna of the site, as well as its unique features and also contains historical information so that people can learn about Pennsylvania's natural heritage without necessarily visiting the places. Bonta gives precise directions on how to reach each area, most of which are easily accessible from the major population centers of the state. In addition, she offers complete information on each site, including the best trails to follow, telephone numbers, hours, availability of group tours, and admission charges. A special section on sources and the detailed bibliography give readers more information on how to obtain maps and books that will add to their appreciation and knowledge of the places and natural history covered in the book. Most of the outings are not too strenuous and are ideal for families and groups of all kinds and ages. Aimed at a broad audience of naturalists, both armchair and active, More Outbound Journeys in Pennsylvania will also interest birdwatchers, hikers, campers, fishermen, hunters, canoeists, and wildflower and plant enthusiasts. Anyone who is interested in outdoor Pennsylvania can use this book to discover and enjoy the natural beauty of the Keystone State.
