Adeline Virginia Woolf (1882–1941) was an English writer. She is widely hailed as being among the most influential modernist authors of the 20th century and a pioneer of stream of consciousness narration. Woolf was a central figure in the feminist criticism movement of the 1970s, her works having inspired countless women to take up the cause. She suffered numerous nervous breakdowns during her life primarily as a result of the deaths of family members, and it is now believed that she may have suffered from bipolar disorder. In 1941, Woolf drowned herself in the River Ouse at Lewes, aged 59. This book contains volume I of her collected works, her famous novels “The Years” and “The Waves”. The last of Virginia Woolf's novels published during her lifetime. "The Years" (1937) is seemingly epic in scope, spanning fifty years and the trials and tribulations of an extended family, but remains in-depth and personal focusing on a single day in each chosen year to give the reader a real connection as we watch the characters and relationships evolve and grow through their life time. Arguably her most experimental work, “The Waves” (1931) comprises soliloquies by six characters punctuated by third-person descriptions of a coastal scene. Through her characters, Woolf examines the concepts of self, individuality, and community in a poignant and thoroughly thought-provoking novel. Read & Co. A Room of One’s Own is an essay written by Virginia Woolf. It was published in 1929 and is based on two lectures given by the author in 1928 at two colleges for women at Cambridge. In this famous essay, Woolf addressed the status of women, and women artists in particular. In this essay, the author also asserts that a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write. According to Woolf, women’s creativity has been curtailed due to centuries of prejudice and financial and educational disadvantages. To emphasize her view, she offers the example of an imaginary gifted but uneducated sister of William Shakespeare, who, discouraged from all eventually kills herself. Woolf celebrates the work of women who have overcome that tradition and become writers, including Jane Austen, George Eliot, and the Brontë sisters, Anne, Charlotte, and Emily. In the final section Woolf suggests that great minds are neutral and argues that intellectual freedom requires financial freedom. The author entreats her audience to write not only fiction but poetry, criticism, and scholarly works as well.
