This book charts the evolution of US foreign policy towards South Africa, beginning in 1948 when the architects of apartheid, the Nationalist Party, came to power. Thomson highlights three sets of conflicting Western interests: strategic, economic and human rights.

This book examines United States policy towards South Africa in the 1970s, spanning the period of the Nixon, Ford and Carter administrations. What sets it apart from similar works is that it analyses policy in the broader context of American ideals and responses to apartheid. It examines whether actual policies were in conformity with these ideals and focuses attention on the American predicament over the issue of apartheid.

This title was first published in 2001. "Grand aims" refers to the overarching tenets and doctrines that prevailed in US and South African foreign policies towards Africa. This study argues that when modest means were imposed upon American and South African foreign policy-makers, they were often forced to devise new grand aims. Few in-depth resources exist with regard to United States and/or South African foreign policies towards Africa. Those that do are overwhelmingly pre- or early-1990s in focus. This analysis encompasses the years 1990 to mid-1998 and is intended to be relevant to a broad readership, including academics, students, Africanists, historians, political scientists, regional specialists and policy-makers in the public and private sectors on both sides of the Atlantic.

A system of enforced racial separation known as apartheid has been an official government policy of the Republic of South Africa since the National Party came to power in 1948. A major US policy goal has been the elimination of apartheid and the establishment of a non-racial democracy committed to human rights and economic opportunity for all people of South Africa. Since 1986, US policy has been a combination of economic sanctions imposed by Congress with the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986 and a continuation of the constructive engagement initiatives begun by the Reagan Administration during the early 1980s. Under 'constructive engagement, ' the Administration sought an evolutionary process of reform in South Africa through diplomatic initiatives and a variety of assistance given to apartheid victims. This study assesses the effectiveness of current US policy in light of US interest in South Africa, the limitations of the policy, and the progress made toward stated policy goals. It concludes by proposing a future policy that will serve the US well in protecting and furthering its interests in Southern Africa. Originally published in 1968, this volume traces the history and growth of Apartheid in South Africa. The acts which enforced Apartheid – the Group Areas Act, Population and Registration Act are given in full. The book also includes documents which reflected reaction to these measures: Parliamentary debates, newspaper reports and policy statements by the leading political parties and religious denominations. The documents are headed by a full historical and analytical introduction.
