Turning to the Catholic Church as a means of healing from childhood abuse, Hank Estrada looked for consolation and comfort but instead found cruel deception and ultimate religious betrayal at the hands of a very powerful religious machine, and in particular one manipulative, deviant priest. UnHoly Communion is a shocking and candid account of one man's personal battle with the darker side of the Catholic Church. Read the author's first hand accounts of how the Catholic Church continued to shamefully protect one of its sexual predators while he moved on from one victim to another. In this heart wrenching memoir, Estrada describes his road to hell and back as he lived through devastating sexual scandals and found the courage to persevere. This inspiring story of determination and resilience is for anyone who has struggled with any type of childhood abuse, adult exploitation, or the unspeakable sex crimes from once trusted clergy. Estrada connects with the reader and shows us how hope, peace and love can be found if you don't give up.

This volume is the fruit of a “theological laboratory” initiated by the then-Centre for Child Protection and the Catholic Theological Ethics in the World Church (CTEWC) called “Doing Theology in the Face of Sexual Abuse.” Eventually those from the laboratory engaged those meeting for two years via “virtual tables,” due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the end, twenty-six scholars offer insights on the crisis itself and pathways for moving forward. There is a certain urgency about this volume, which is not often reflected in works of theology or theological ethics. The sheer scale of the undermining of human dignity through sexual abuse that has occurred within the church asks questions of these disciplines and scholars within them: To what extent have we been blind to these issues? Why have our efforts in theology and theological ethics been so slow to wrestle with this crisis? How are theology and theological ethics implicated in the crisis? And how might the disciplines be constructive in responding? In this volume, we encounter a diverse range of scholars from all around the world wrestling with these and other questions.

While seminaries, by many accounts, admit an increasing number of homosexuals, women are strictly barred from ministerial roles. The church's time-honored tradition of "avoiding scandal" also backfires. For by the shielding of fallen clerics, Berry shows, the suffering of the abused is often compounded.

The Bible has a way of shocking us. If Americans could still blush, we might blush at the words, "Rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love" (Proverbs 5:18-19). But, of course, sin always tries to trash God's gifts. So we can't just celebrate sex for what God made it to be; we have to fight what sin turned it into. The contributors to this unique volume encourage you to do both: celebrate and struggle. This book has something for all-men and women, married and single-from contributors like John Piper, C. J. and Carolyn Mahaney, Mark Dever, Al Mohler, Carolyn McCulley, and others.
