Autism is a profoundly contested idea. The focus of this book is not what autism is or what autistic people are, but rather, it grapples with the central question: what does it take for autistic people to participate in a shared world as equals with other people? Drawing from her close reading of a range of texts, by autistic authors, filmmakers, bloggers, and academics, Anna Stenning highlights the creativity and imagination in these accounts and also considers the possibilities that emerge when the unexpected and novel aspects of experience are attended to and afforded their due space. It argues that scholarship on literature and the body is of fundamental importance to discussions about gender, race, sexuality, class, age, narrative form, and processes of reading and writing. Autism Spectrum Disorder is one of the most controversial behavioral disorders in America, and I have it. Diagnosed at a young age with Asperger's Syndrome, a now defunct diagnosis, I have been marked as different, weird, a freak. In this thesis I will reflect on the autistic existence and the precarity of the autistic voice, while using personal anecdotes about my life on the spectrum along with Sandra McPherson's The Spaces Between Birds, which is centered around raising her daughter, Phoebe, who is on the autism spectrum, two first-hand accounts: Donna Williams' memoir Nobody Nowhere, and Anand Prahlad's The Secret Life of a Black Aspie: A Memoir. Through the methodology of the fragment, I weave research, analysis of these texts, and personal stories about being autistic, to demonstrate the shattered existence of living on the autism spectrum. These narratives are contextualized by my own research into the history of the diagnosis and autistic rhetoric. Through the fragment, as well as autotheory, I represent what it's like living on the autism spectrum.

Dreaming of Endangered Species explores issues of health and illness, disability and cure, and human frailty and vulnerability in an age of global unease and uncertainty. It maps a tension between the infinite and finite, between the concrete and ethereal. In some ways, it is a celebration of the mundane, by which I mean the world of everyday objects, of plants and animals, scents, textures, movements, water, and phases of the moon. But interwoven with this testament to ineffable beauty, this celebratory mode, are reflections on my cancer, for example, my autistic strivings, my gender queer identity, and the plight of the natural world. A recurrent thread that runs through the manuscript is the idea of dreaming, which offers a kind of poetic membrane, a connective tissue that softens some of the weighty concerns and allows them a more muted resonance than they might otherwise have.
