Excerpt from The Scotch-Irish in America Acknowledgment of the importance of Ulster emigration to America frequently occurs in the works of English and American historians deal ing with the events of the eighteenth century, and a mass of literature has accumulated in both countries with regard to particular phases of the subject. A systematic treatise devoted to that special theme seemed to be desirable, and hence the book now before the reader. The Scotch-Irish in America tells the story of the Ulster Plantation and of the influences that formed the character of the Scotch-Irish people. The author commences with a detailed discussion of the events leading to the Scottish migration to Ulster in the seventeenth century, followed by an examination of the causes of the secondary exodus of these same "Scotch-Irish" to North America before the end of the century. Entire chapters are then devoted to the Scotch-Irish settlement in New England, New York, the Jerseys, Pennsylvania, and along the colonial frontier. Special chapters take up the role of the Scotch-Irish in the development of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S., the Scotch-Irish in the American Revolution, and the role of the Scotch-Irish in the spread of popular education in America.

Excerpt from The Scotch-Irish in America: Their History, Traits, Institutions and Influences: Especially as Illustrated in the Early Settlers of Western Pennsylvania and Their Descendants I have read with deep interest the advance sheets of The scotch-irish in America, by Rev. Dr. John W. Dinsmore, my friend, and former pas tor. It is in every respect an admir able book. Every man who has a drop of scotch-irish blood in his veins will be profoundly interested in its perusal. Dr. Dinsmore knows whereof he writes. Nothing the book contains is matter of hearsay to him. The people described are those among whom he was reared - his neighbors and friends; the incidents mentioned, those of which he was the witness in his early life.
