Robert Lehman, one of the foremost art collectors of his generation, embraced traditional and modern masters. This work catalogues 130 nineteenth- and 20th-century paintings that are part of the Robert Lehman Collection at the Metropolitan Museum. It includes paintings by Ingres, Theodore Rousseau, and Corot among other early 19th-century artists. In addition to a group of early German drawings, this collection includes a Saint Paul from a series associated with Jan van Eyck and the famous Scupstoel from the circle of Rogier van der Weyden. This volume catalogues the more than 250 textiles and objects made of fabric that were part of Robert Lehman's bequest to the Metropolitan Museum in 1975. Many of these textiles were used as hangings, covers, or upholstery to embellish the Lehmans' elegant townhouse in Manhattan. They represent sixty-five years of assembling, owning, and living with historic fabrics on a day-to-day basis, and they document an American style of living and interior decoration that has largely disappeared. Among the highlights of the collection are two series of embroidered roundels from fifteenth-century Flanders that illustrate the lives of Saints Martin and Catherine of Alexandria; four large tapestries, including the Last Supper after Bernaert van Orley that is arguably the finest Renaissance tapestry in an American collection; and a number of ecclesiastical vestments and panels of magnificent silks and velvets in an array of techniques and styles that span six centuries. The Robert Lehman Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art houses one of the finest collections of frames in the world. The collection Robert Lehman bequeathed to the Museum includes nearly 400 frames, most of them Italian and French and dating from the 14th to the 18th century. Although he bought most of these frames to display his paintings and drawings, a number of them were acquired as works of art in their own right. Using the documentary evidence that survives, this volume attempts to place these frames on the pictures and in the interiors for which they were intended. For each frame, the author has provided a profile drawing that is a key to its design, origin, date, and application. This Bulletin discusses the Met's extensive collection of Renaissance textile pattern books, used primarily by women to embroider clothes and accessories. The practice of embroidery was seen as a virtuous endeavor, and textile pattern books, published with great frequency from the 1520s onward, were designed to inspire, instruct, and encourage "beautiful and virtuous women" in this esteemed practice. Straddling the disciplines of early printmaking, ornament design, and textile decoration, these works help shed light on the crucial period when the concept of fashion as a means of distinguishing individual identity became fixed in Western society.
