The most significant phenomenon occurring around us today is the European crisis. As well as being a “total social phenomenon” as classical French sociologist Émile Durkheim would have said, it also affects all the levels of our lives—be they political, economic, cultural or social. Nothing remains untouched. In other words, it represents a “perfect storm”. This volume brings together the contributions of twenty authors, scientists from the “Ion I.C. Brătianu” Institute of Political Sciences and International Relations of the Romanian Academy, in response to this challenge. Using an expression that is becoming more abundantly associated with Europe, namely “the perfect storm”, the book decodes multiple layers of the crisis, whether they relate to migrants, terrorism, Brexit, the economic crisis of the Eurozone, the Turkish challenge, Russian pressures, TTIP, the resurrection of populism, or the (intermittent) hysteria of the European media.

Any crisis, being a "total social phenomenon", as classical French sociologist Émile Durkheim, would have said, affects all the levels of our lives-be they political, economic, cultural or social. Nothing remains untouched, but what is old, and what is new in the EU of today? This volume offers an answer to this question, demonstrating that old issues remain without solution (even if they seem "forgotten" for the public attention or the political agenda), that new challenges infiltrated our lives, and finally, the conclusion is that the crisis tends to be the "opposite" of its primary meaning: it is no longer an acute and short moment in the existence of any entity, but it becomes a permanence, reaching each day new ramifications.

This handbook comprehensively explores the European Union’s institutional and policy responses to crises across policy domains and institutions – including the Euro crisis, Brexit, the Ukraine crisis, the refugee crisis, as well as the global health crisis resulting from COVID-19. It contributes to our understanding of how crisis affects institutional change and continuity, decision-making behavior and processes, and public policy-making. It offers a systematic discussion of how the existing repertoire of theories understand crisis and how well they capture times of unrest and events of disintegration. More generally, the handbook looks at how public organizations cope with crises, and thus probes how sustainable and resilient public organizations are in times of crisis and unrest.

The Euro Crisis produced the most significant challenge to European integration in 60 years testing the structures and powers of the European Union and the Eurozone and threatening the common currency. This book explores how the financial and political crisis was portrayed in the European press and the implications of that coverage on public understanding of the developments, their causes, responsibilities for addressing the crisis, the roles and effectiveness of European institutions, and the implications for European integration and identity. It addresses factors that shaped news and analysis, the roles of European leaders, and the extent to which national and pan-European debates over the crisis occurred. In doing so, it provides a clear and readable explanation of what the portrayals tell us about Europe and European integration in the early twenty-first century."

Kirchen in Europa haben eine spezifische Erfahrungs-Geschichte mit ihrer Verhältnisbestimmung zur Nation. Obwohl im Prinzip darüber einig, dass der christliche Glaube in seiner Grundtendenz von einem übernationalen, ja universalistischen Charakter geprägt ist, wird spätestens seit dem 19. Jahrhundert immer wieder gefragt, ob nicht doch Nation und nationale Identität zur Schöpfung Gottes gehören. Gegenwärtig wird das in den Kirchen Europas kontrovers diskutiert, eng verbunden mit Erfahrungen von Migration. "Nation" klingt anders für protestantische Minderheitskirchen als für orthodoxe oder römisch-katholische Kirche in ehemals kommunistischen Staaten und wieder anders für deutsche Kirchen, die ihre Verquickung mit dem Nationalsozialismus verarbeiten müssen. Können Nationalbewusstsein und gegenwärtige Migrationserfahrungen zusammengehen? Haben die Kirchen in ökumenischer Perspektive dazu etwas Spezifisches zu sagen? Mit diesen Fragen beschäftigt sich dieser Tagungsband der Societas Oecumenica. Mit Beiträgen von Elzbieta Adamiak, Niko Huttunen, Petre Maican, Ivana Noble, Friederike Nüssel, Peter Phan, Hector Scerri, Peter-Ben Smit, Andrea Strübind, Ulrike Link-Wieczorek, Kaholi Zhimomi Churches in Europe have specific historical experiences regarding their relationship with the nation. Although in principle it is agreed that the Christian faith is in its basic tendency shaped by a supranational, even universalistic character, since the 19th century at the latest it has been repeatedly asked whether nation and national identity do not belong to God's creation. At present this is controversially discussed in the churches of Europe, closely connected with experiences of migration. Can national consciousness and current migration experiences go together? Do churches have anything specific to say about this in an ecumenical perspective? These are the questions addressed in this conference volume of the Societas Oecumenica.

Antibiotics are truly miracle drugs. As a class, they are one of the only ones that actually cure disease as opposed to most drugs that only help relieve symptoms or control disease. Since bacteria that cause serious disease in humans are becoming more and more resistant to the antibiotics we have today, and because they will ultimately become resistant to any antibiotic that we use for treatment or for anything else, we need a steady supply of new antibiotics active against any resistant bacteria that arise. However, the antibiotics marketplace is no longer attractive for large pharmaceutical companies, the costs of development are skyrocketing because of ever more stringent requirements by the regulatory agencies, and finding new antibiotics active against resistant strains is getting harder and harder. These forces are all combining to deny us these miracle drugs when we need them the most. I provide a number of possible paths to shelter from this perfect storm.
