1917. With frontispiece by H. Weston Taylor. Bower authored several Westerns including Cabin Fever and The Flying U Ranch. The Lookout Man begins: From the obscurity of vast, unquiet distance the surf came booming in with the heavy impetus of high tide, flinging long streamers of kelp and bits of driftwood over the narrowing stretch of sand where garishly costumed bathers had lately shrieked hilariously at their gambols. Before the chill wind that had risen with the turn of the tide the bathers retreated in dripping, shivering groups, to appear later in fluffs and furs and woolen sweaters; still inclined to hilarity, still undeniably loth to leave off their pleasuring at Venice, dedicated to cheap pleasures. "The Lookout Man" is a gripping Western novel written by B. M. Bower. Published in 1917, it tells the compelling story of Jerry Brandon, a young cowboy who finds himself caught in a dangerous web of deception and treachery. Jerry's life takes an unexpected turn when he becomes the lookout man for a gang of outlaws planning a series of daring robberies. As he becomes entangled in their criminal activities, Jerry must navigate a precarious path, torn between loyalty to his newfound companions and his own moral compass. Bower skillfully weaves a tale of suspense, moral dilemmas, and redemption against the backdrop of the rugged and unforgiving Western landscape. Through Jerry's journey, the reader is drawn into a world of hidden identities, narrow escapes, and dramatic confrontations. The plot showcases Bower's talent for creating complex characters and intricate plotlines. It delves into themes of personal integrity, the struggle between right and wrong, and the power of redemption. With its vivid descriptions and fast-paced narrative, this novel captivates readers with its blend of action, drama, and moral introspection.

"Sometimes elegiac, sometimes deadly comic, but always vivid and surprising, The Lookout Man embodies the mastery, spirit, and craft that we have come to depend upon in Stuart Dischell's poetry. In a mix of recognizable lyric forms, and set in diverse locales from the middle of the ocean to the summit of Mont Blanc, from America's back yard to the streets of international cities, there is a hesitant, almost encroaching wisdom in The Lookout Man, alternately nostalgic and fierce in nature. The poet doesn't shy away from taking on the big, risky, some would say played-out topics, but the poems never lead us where we expect to go. Rather, Dischell allows messy contradictions to exist in the drama and action of the poems, even while maintaining the beautiful form and music of polished verse. In a wonderful example that closes the book and that typifies Dischell's work, he writes, "I will ask the dogwoods to remind me // "What it means to live along the edges of the woods / To be promiscuous but bear white flowers.""--
