Over the past few decades, the book series Linguistische Arbeiten [Linguistic Studies], comprising over 500 volumes, has made a significant contribution to the development of linguistic theory both in Germany and internationally. The series will continue to deliver new impulses for research and maintain the central insight of linguistics that progress can only be made in acquiring new knowledge about human languages both synchronically and diachronically by closely combining empirical and theoretical analyses. To this end, we invite submission of high-quality linguistic studies from all the central areas of general linguistics and the linguistics of individual languages which address topical questions, discuss new data and advance the development of linguistic theory.

How is the biblical text understood and how does it function in the life of the reader today? Richard Briggs first provides an illuminating introduction to the nature and claims of speech art theory. This seeks to extend our understanding of both spoken and written means of communication by seeing them not as merely representational or 'reality-depicting', but as acting or causing acts to be performed through the words themselves. Briggs goes on to discuss to what extent the application of speech act theory might be helpful in the interpretation of biblical texts. In one of the first book-length explorations of this topic, he examines in detail several biblical speech acts of particular theological significance, including the confession of sin, forgiveness and teaching. Through exploring the specific ways in which the reader is drawn into the performative action of the biblical text, and how speech act theory forces the reader to look beyond language into the world which gives the language its ability to function, speech act theory is shown to offer valuable insights within today's complex hermeneutical debate. With its relentless insistence that there is no reality beyond that which we construct, postmodern thought questions the presuppositions of many disciplines, including homiletics. Offering a lively description of the postmodern worldview and its implications for Christian faith, Confessing Jesus Christ by David Lose teaches preachers how to rise to the challenges posed by our postmodern world. Few if any books on preaching offer such a comprehensive investigation of postmodern thought or yield such a wealth of insights for relevant Christian proclamation. Significantly, Lose sees postmodernism not primarily as an obstacle to the church but as an opportunity for it to stand once again on faith alone rather than on attempts to prove the faith. According to Lose, preaching that seeks to be both faithful to the Christian tradition and responsive to our pluralistic, postmodern context is best understood as the public practice of confessing faith in Jesus Christ. He explores the practical implications of a confessional homiletic for preaching and also provides concrete methods for preparing sermons that meaningfully bridge biblical texts and contemporary congregations.

“A New Creed” is, by all accounts, a dominant feature of The United Church of Canada. Since its initial writing in 1968, it has come to be a primary symbol of the denomination in the ancient Christian (baptismal) sense of the word and also in the modern. The Search for a Symbol reveals the fascinating and largely untold story of “A New Creed’s” origins. It also engages in an unprecedented historical, literary, and theological analysis of the creed’s text. This book offers the provocative argument that though “A New Creed” should continue to have a place in the life and liturgy of Canada’s largest Protestant church, it does not take full advantage of the possible benefits that can come from healthy practices of creedal confession—namely teaching people about the biblical story of salvation as well as connecting them in relationship with God and one another. For these purposes, the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds are shown to be better confessional options, and readily available ones within The United Church’s tradition.

Amos Yong is the most prolific pentecostal theologian to date, and his published works are so many that it is difficult to find an amiable entry point into his thought. An Amos Yong Reader is the first introduction to Yong's theology in his own words. It brings into one volume representative samples of the broad range of Yong's scholarship, including theology of religions, religion and science, theology and disability, political theology, Luke-Acts, and theological method. Christopher A. The papers in this volume were presented at a conference held at the Roehampton Institute, London, in February 1995, and are concerned with either theological or literary issues related to the nature of religious language. The papers suggest further issues that are still unresolved about the nature of religious language, from its early usage in the biblical texts to its recent use in contemporary writing and religious discourse.
