This book explores the strategies adopted by the Jesuit missions under the Portuguese and Spanish patronage vis-à-vis Islamic powers such as the Mughal Empire in South Asia and the expansion of Islam in the Southeast-Asian peripheries. Based on a comparative perspective, this book examines the interconnections between the Jesuit proselytizing activities and the imperial projects of the Iberian crowns in Asia, highlighting the role of the Jesuit missionaries operating in Asian Islamic settings as diplomatic and cultural mediators. It is aimed at researchers and students working on Jesuit missions in South Asia, the Portuguese and Spanish Empires in Asia, early modern cross-cultural diplomacy, early modern travel accounts, and early modern ethnography.

The present volume is a result of an international symposium on the encounters between Jesuits and Protestants in Asia and the Americas, which organized by Boston College’s Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies in June 2017.

"This book argues that the development of Catholicism in Asia was closely connected with globalization. Since the 16th century Catholicisms has contributed significantly to global connectivity, while at the same time the Church 's global expansion has transformed the Church's own global consciousness. Casanova and Phan adopt a framework of three distinct phases of the development of Catholicism in Asia and Oceania - early modern (16th to 18th centuries), modern Western hegemony (1780s to the 1960s), and the contemporary, after Western hegemony. With this framework, contributors discuss the development of Catholicism in all major countries of the region, including China, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, India, and Australia. Except for the Philippines and Timor-Leste, Catholicism in Asia is and is likely to remain a minority religion for the foreseeable future. For that reason, however, it can serve as a unique prism through which to look at the processes of globalization in Asia, precisely because the historical processes through which Catholicism took roots in the entire region and became inculturated as an Asian religion are so intimately connected with the processes of globalization"--

It was one of the great encounters of world history: highly educated European priests confronting Chinese culture for the first time in the modern era. This “journey to the East” is explored by Liam Brockey as he retraces the path of the Jesuit missionaries who sailed from Portugal to China, believing that, with little more than firm conviction and divine assistance, they could convert the Chinese to Christianity. Moving beyond the image of Jesuits as cultural emissaries, his book shows how these priests, in the first concerted European effort to engage with Chinese language and thought, translated Roman Catholicism into the Chinese cultural frame and eventually claimed two hundred thousand converts. The first narrative history of the Jesuits’ mission from 1579 until the proscription of Christianity in China in 1724, this study is also the first to use extensive documentation of the enterprise found in Lisbon and Rome. The peril of travel in the premodern world, the danger of entering a foreign land alone and unarmed, and the challenge of understanding a radically different culture result in episodes of high drama set against such backdrops as the imperial court of Peking, the villages of Shanxi Province, and the bustling cities of the Yangzi Delta region. Further scenes show how the Jesuits claimed conversions and molded their Christian communities into outposts of Baroque Catholicism in the vastness of China. This volume focuses on the various phenomena of religious encounters in a transcultural society where religion or religious traditions play a significant role in a multi-cultural concept. Religious Encounters in Transcultural Society is divided into three parts: Islamic encounters with regional religions, East Asian religious encounters, and alternative religious encounters. This book evokes the fact that religious encounters exist in every transcultural society even though they often remain hidden behind socio-cultural issues. The situation can be changed, but one culture cannot harmoniously and always contain two or multi-beliefs. The issue of religious encounters mostly arises in the transnational process of religious globalization.

The state of Goa on India's southwest coast was once the capital of the Portuguese-Catholic empire in Asia. When Vasco Da Gama arrived in India in 1498, he mistook Hindus for Christians, but Jesuit missionaries soon declared war on the alleged idolatry of the Hindus. Today, Hindus and Catholics assert their own religious identities, but Hindu village gods and Catholic patron saints attract worship from members of both religious communities. Through fresh readings of early Portuguese sources and long-term ethnographic fieldwork, this study traces the history of Hindu-Catholic syncretism in Goa and reveals the complex role of religion at the intersection of colonialism and modernity.
