Excerpt from The Canadian Medical Monthly, Vol. 5: December, 1920 A great advantage with bipp was, in discharging cases, there was no necessity for frequent dressing. I Rutherford Morrison dressed his cases only once a week or ten days, reinforcing the dressing when saturated: but he did the dressing with the same scrupulous care he did the operation. I don't think there is much doubt that if you have thirty open wounds in a ward, all clean but one, that without scrupulous care when dressing each case daily, all your wounds will soon be septic. The dressing is surely as important as the opera tion, and with infrequent dressings the danger is minimized. Bipp seemed to me to do two things, mixed with the discharge it formed a poor medium for germ growth, and by preventing rapid union allowed some drainage, thereby avoiding retention of septic matter under pressure. Pus. Not under pressure, or where there is free drainage, as in a through and through wound of the thigh from front to back, with a large posterior Opening, does not require daily changing of dressing. And one Often had cases that seemed to be doing quite well, dressed daily, suddenly flare up and become again acute conditions, some of which at auv rate, may have been due to a mixed infection. Due to careless dressing of many septic cases the same morning. One would not think of dressing several pus cases and then going to a clean one without. Taking every precaution, and it seems sensible that the same care should be taken when dressing one pus case after another. When a patient with a discharging wound is comfortable, temperature coming down and making good progress, I don't think there is any need to change dressings daily, attempt to clean the skin around the wound to make it look nice, cause the patient a lot of pain and disturbance, especially when one has had these cases go on much better dressed every fifth day and then simply by changing the gauze, without cleaning the skin or mopping out the wound. Excerpt from The Canadian Medical Monthly, Vol. 5: September, 1920 To the pharmacologist the testing of digitalis is a relatively simple matter. By injecting graded doses into frogs he can readily ascertain the minimum fatal dose. By checking this against a known standard and chemically pure prep aration Of strophanthin, he can accurately state whether any preparation of digital's conforms to the requirements Of the u.s.f. Or the similar standards suggested and in use in Great Britain or elsewhere by pharmacologists. As the minimum lethal dose the pharmacologist considers the amount that will just suffice to stop the heart of a frog in one hour. I am, Of course, not detailing the rather careful and important technical precautions that must be taken in ascertaining this amount. Excerpt from The Canadian Medical Monthly, Vol. 5: July, 1920 The accurate study of symptoms reveals very definite information when once the usual order of their appearance is recognized. Headache was present in eighty-three cases, varying slightly in its location, and greatly in. Its degree of constancy. In seventy-three cases it was always frontal, or perhaps better, temporal. The patient almost invariably places his thumb over one temple and his fingers over the other and squeezes the frontal bone to demonstrate the position and tight, vice-like character of the pain. The stock expression used by them is, - In behind the eyes. In four cases the headache was chiefly occipital. In four others it grew to be a universal, bursting headache of terrible intensity and each of these four were put to bed.
