This volume collects papers dedicated to Jerry Ericksen on his sixtieth birthday, December 20, 1984. They first appeared in Volumes 82-90 (1983-1985) of the Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis. At the request of the Editors the list of authors to be invited was drawn up by C. M. Dafermos, D. D. Joseph, and F. M. Leslie. The breadth and depth of the works here reprinted reflect the corresponding qualities in Jerry Ericksen's research, teaching, scholarship, and inspiration. His interests and expertness center upon the mechanics of materials and extend to everything that may contribute to it: pure analysis, algebra, geometry, through all aspects of theoretical mechanics to fundamental experiment, all of these illumi nated by an intimate and deep familiarity with the sources, even very old ones. He is independent of school and contemptuous of party spirit; his generosity in giving away his ideas is renowned, but not everyone is capable of accepting what is offered. His writings are totally free of broad claims and attributions beyond his own study. Some are decisive, some are prophetic, and all are forthright. His work has served as a beacon of insight and simple honesty in an age of ever more trivial and corrupt science. The authors of the memoirs in this volume are his students, colleagues, admirers, and (above all) his friends.

This book is dedicated to the memory of Donald E. Carlson, who enjoyed a long distinguished career as a Professor of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; he influenced the mechanics community through his teachings, publications and interactions. The book disseminates unique research investigations which give breadth and depth to the field of continuum mechanics and provide a vision for future advancements. The common bond of Don's publications was his sound theoretical developments and fundamental insight. He carefully delineated the principal roles of kinematics, conservation laws (including the second law of thermodynamics) and constitutive assumptions not only in his discussions and writings about fundamentals in mechanics but also in his work on the formulation of initial-boundary value problems that arise in modeling the behavior of elastic and thermoelastic bodies. This book expands this lucid practice by applying these roles to model a plethora of physical phenomena on the foundations and applications of modern continuum mechanics. This is a hardbound spinoff edition previously published in the Journal of Elasticity, volumes 104 and 105, 2011.

Through his voluminous and in?uential writings, editorial activities, organi- tional leadership, intellectual acumen, and strong sense of history, Clifford - brose Truesdell III (1919–2000) was the main architect for the renaissance of - tional continuum mechanics since the middle of the twentieth century. The present collection of 42 essays and research papers pays tribute to this man of mathematics, science, and natural philosophy as well as to his legacy. The ?rst ?ve essays by B. D. Coleman, E. Giusti, W. Noll, J. Serrin, and D. Speiser were texts of addresses given by their authors at the Meeting in memory of Clifford Truesdell, which was held in Pisa in November 2000. In these essays the reader will ?nd personal reminiscences of Clifford Truesdell the man and of some of his activities as scientist, author, editor, historian of exact sciences, and principal founding member of the Society for Natural Philosophy. The bulk of the collection comprises 37 research papers which bear witness to the Truesdellian legacy. These papers cover a wide range of topics; what ties them together is the rational spirit. Clifford Truesdell, in his address upon receipt of a Birkhoff Prize in 1978, put the essence of modern continuum mechanics succinctly as “conceptual analysis, analysis not in the sense of the technical term but in the root meaning: logical criticism, dissection, and creative scrutiny.

This expanded second edition presents in one text the concepts and processes covered in statics and mechanics of materials curricula following a systematic, topically integrated approach. Building on the novel pedagogy of fusing concepts covered in traditional undergraduate courses in rigid-body statics and deformable body mechanics, rather than simply grafting them together, this new edition develops further the authors’ very original treatment of solid mechanics with additional figures, an elaboration on selected solved problems, and additional text as well as a new subsection on viscoelasticity in response to students’ feedback. Introduction to Solid Mechanics: An Integrated Approach, Second Edition, offers a holistic treatment of the depth and breadth of solid mechanics and the inter-relationships of its underlying concepts. Proceeding from first principles to applications, the book stands as a whole greater than the sum of its parts.

The papers included in this volume were presented at the Symposium on Advances in the Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamics of Material Behavior, held as part of the 1999 Joint ASME Applied Mechanics and Materials Summer Conference at Virginia Tech on June 27-30, 1999. The Symposium was held in honor of Professor Roger L. Fosdick on his 60th birthday. The papers are written by prominent researchers in the fields of mechanics, thermodynamics, materials modeling, and applied mathematics. They address open questions and present the latest development in these and related areas. This volume is a valuable reference for researchers and graduate students in universities and research laboratories.
