The Adventures of Max and Oliver is a social emotional children's book in intended to teach children, as well as their grown up how their brain works. When children understand what is happening in their body when they are triggered, they can learn to control their response. Oliver the wise owl represents the "smart part" of the brain. When Oliver is in charge, he can help Max stay calm and make good choices. In the story, the farmer tells Max it's time for a bath, Max barks, it scares Oliver, and he flies away. Then, the barking dog is in charge and he only desires safety. The targeted audience is teachers of elementary aged kiddos, and parents of kids up to age 8ish. The conflict in the book is when the wise owl flies away, the barking dog is in a "burning barn" in his mind. The wise owl seeks to teach the barking dog how to push his pause button and take a deep breath. We want our child's Wise Owl to stay in charge, and to do that, they need to get oxygen to their brain. This book will help teach children to take a deep breath before getting upset. That way, when the upset feelings come, they'll have the tools they need to calm down and let Oliver, the Wise Owl, help them make good choices.
