Whilst the retired art supplier Josiah Amberley was at the theatre, his wife ran away with a young man and a good deal of their money. Amberley wants Holmes to track her down but the latter is too busy and sends Watson in his stead. But it soon turns out that Holmes is not the only one who has been asked to solve this case. So now the question is: will the pair be able to track the runaway wife down first? And is there more to the story than they have been told? "The Adventure of the Retired Colourman" is part of "The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes". Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Scotland and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. After his studies, he worked as a ship’s surgeon on various boats. During the Second Boer War, he was an army doctor in South Africa. When he came back to the United Kingdom, he opened his own practice and started writing crime books. He is best known for his thrilling stories about the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. He published four novels and more than 50 short-stories starring the detective and Dr Watson, and they play an important role in the history of crime fiction. Other than the Sherlock Holmes series, Doyle wrote around thirty more books, in genres such as science-fiction, fantasy, historical novels, but also poetry, plays, and non-fiction.

At CBy, we're avid readers ourselves- so our ethos is to make good, honestly advertised books that we'd buy and read ourselves- not just to maximise our profits. That's why we have a 4 point checklist of guaranteed quality. We guarantee that this book: Comes with size 10 text- some companies like to scrimp a bit and use small text. We know how hard it is to read books like that, so we use a standard size 10 serif font that's been designed for legibility throughout. Comes in a standard size that looks great on your bookshelf- sometimes, we accidentally buy books that have been sized like childrens' books to save money. That's why we're upfront- this particular book is sized at the paperback industry standard: 5.06" x 7.81". Comes with a beautifully designed glossy cover, unlike anything on the market. We hate books that look like they've come from a time capsule- so our team of designers have come up with a timeless design that's true to Conan Doyle's heritage. We love it, but take a look at it yourself in the flesh- again, if you don't like it, simply return it, no questions asked. Comes with the complete original and illustrated text from The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes. We hate books that miss things out- and we've carefully proofread this book to make sure that's not the case. We love this book, and we hope that you will too. Thanks for considering CBy's range of classics. "The Adventure of the Retired Colourman" is one of 12 Sherlock Holmes short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle in The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes.

The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle - is the final set of twelve (out of a total of fifty-six) Sherlock Holmes short stories by British writer Arthur Conan Doyle first published in the Strand Magazine between October 1921 and April 1927. Title of collection: The first British edition of the collection, published by John Murray, and the first American edition, published by George H. Doran Co., were both published in June 1927. However, they had slightly different titles. The title of the British collection was The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes (hyphenated "Case-Book"), whereas the title of the American edition was The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes ("Case Book" as two words). Further confusing the issue of the title, some later publishers released the collection under the title The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes ("Casebook" as a single word). Contents: The first edition of The Case-Book, published by John Murray in 1927, does not present the stories in the order in which they were published:[2] 1 The Adventure of the Illustrious Client 2 The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier 3 The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone 4 The Adventure of the Three Gables 5 The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire 6 The Adventure of the Three Garridebs 7 The Problem of Thor Bridge 8 The Adventure of the Creeping Man 9 The Adventure of the Lion's Mane 10 The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger 11 The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place 12 The Adventure of the Retired Colourman

"Sixty original tales of Sherlock Holmes -- which one is the best? In sixty essays, sixty Sherlockians make the case for each of the stories. Their arguments range from the playful to the academic, and are as varied as the authors themselves. As editor Christopher Redmond says, ""What they have written is compelling evidence that any one of the Sherlock Holmes stories can be the best; it’s all a matter of what the reader is looking for."" Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s tales range from Victorian horror, to jewel heists, to society scandals. As these authors show, there's a Sherlock Holmes adventure for every taste. This volume benefits the Beacon Society. No royalties from the sale of this volume will be paid to either the authors or the editor. Royalties earned will, with the cooperation of the publisher, be turned over in their entirety to the Beacon Society, a not-for-profit organization of Sherlockians with the purpose of introducing young people to Sherlock Holmes through classrooms and libraries."

ILLUSTRATED (By several Artists)ANNOTATIONS*Biography of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle*About The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes*The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes Summary*Character List*Glossary*Themes*Quotes*Analysis*Symbols, Allegory and Motifs*Metaphors and Similes*Irony*Imagery*Literary Elements*Essay QuestionsThe Case Book of Sherlock Holmes contains twelve stories written about the legendary consulting detective by his creator Arthur Conan Doyle. Like all the other Sherlock Holmes adventures, these stories were originally published in the Strand Magazine, in this case between October 1921 and April 1927. What sets the stories collected in the Case Book of Sherlock Holmes from all other anthologies is that that they represent the winding down of a literary sensation. These are the last original mysteries of Holmes to be published in the Strand and this is the last collection of original stories penned by Doyle.Although new editions sometimes reorder the stories, the order in which they appeared when The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes was originally published (in chronological ordering according to their serial publication date) is as follows:"The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone" (1921)"The Problem of Thor Bridge" (1922)"The Adventure of the Creeping Man" (1923)"The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire" (1924)"The Adventure of the Three Garridebs" (1924)"The Adventure of the Illustrious Client" (1924)"The Adventure of the Three Gables" (1926)"The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier" (1926)"The Adventure of the Lion's Mane" (1926)"The Adventure of the Retired Colourman" (1926)"The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger" (1927)"The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place" (1927)Some of the selections that that appear in The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes are the only remaining original Holmes stories written by Doyle that are not in the public domain. More will be added according to copyright law expiration dates until the year 2023, at which point all of the Holmes adventures will officially be considered public domain.Several of the stories in the collection were adapted for the highly regarded Granada TV series starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes. In fact, all but the "Blanched Soldier," the "Lion's Mane," the "Veiled Lodger," and the "Retired Colourman" were adapted for the acclaimed series. ("The Three Gables" is incorporated thematically though not narratively into "The Mazarin Stone.")
