Stock of the University of Illinois, who suggested the problem and whose advice and criticism were Of great value. Experiments were conducted in the laboratories of the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Illinois, and field trips were made to the Vermilion county coal field, where samples of coal were collected from a number Of mines. Other samples were obtained from various sources. The author is indebted to Professor E. A.
