This guide is a collection of practical ideas for teaching listening skills to learners of a second language. Most are contributed by teachers of English as a Second Language, but the activities may be appropriate for other languages. Each idea is described briefly, with information given about appropriate proficiency level(s), specific aims, class time requirements, preparation time, needed resources, procedures, and caveats and options. The first section focuses on development of cognitive strategies: listening to the main idea; listening for details; and predicting. Section 2 contains activities that demonstrated the interlinked nature of listening with speaking, pronunciation, and vocabulary. The third section provides ideas for teaching aspects of stress, intonation, and register, particularly as they relate to pronunciation. A subsequent section deals with the use of technology in the listening classroom, and the next with listening for academic purposes, especially at the higher education level, where instruction is often provided in a second language. The final section draws together disparate tasks that deal with affective aspects of the listening process, using songs and relaxation techniques. An addendum includes tasks for dealing with problems in the listening classroom. (MSE)

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 1,3, University of Trier, language: English, abstract: This paper deals primarily with the analysis and the evaluation of a listening exercise taken from a textbook series called Password Green. Password Green 3 is an English textbook for students in Germany who attend the seventh grade of a Gymnasium (i.e. secondary school). Further, the theory of listening (comprehension) (as provided by: Andreas Müller-Hartmann and Marita Schocker-v. Ditfurth (Introduction to English Language Teaching) and the educational magazine Der Fremdsprachliche Unterricht Englisch: Hörverstehen) as well as the Syllabus (Lehrplan English Sekundarstufe I / Gymnaisum) and the Educational Standards (Bildugnsstandards erste Fremdsprache Mittlerer Schulabschluss) will be taken into consideration. With the help of these stated sources the practical example will be analysed. Moreover, the term paper aims to illustrate to what extent the exercise applies to the theory and the requirements of Educational Standards and Curriculum. Additionally, the evaluation from a teacher ́s perspective will discuss under which conditions the exercise may be used or what risks and chances the analysed task can entail. It is important to mention that this term paper lays focus on my own opinion towards the analysed practical example and therefore does not reflect the opinion of any of the authors found in the list of secondary sources.

This book challenges the orthodox approach to the teaching of second language listening, which is based upon the asking and answering of comprehension questions. The book's central argument is that a preoccupation with the notion of 'comprehension' has led teachers to focus upon the product of listening, in the form of answers to questions, ignoring the listening process itself. The author provides an informed account of the psychological processes which make up the skill of listening, and analyses the characteristics of the speech signal from which listeners have to construct a message. Drawing upon this information, the book proposes a radical alternative to the comprehension approach and provides for intensive small-scale practice in aspects of listening that are perceptually or cognitively demanding for the learner. Listening in the Language Classroom was winner of the Ben Warren International Trust House Prize in 2008.
