Systematic Glossary of the Terminology of Statistical Methods

Environmental problems ignore international boundaries. Toxic wastes travel by water and air, sometimes displacing the effects of an environmental disaster entirely outside of its country of origin. It is now understood that to overcome the problems that face us international co-operation is required. This important work is designed to assist in that process, by helping to break down the language barriers that stand between countries. The manual, written in parallel English, German, French and Russian texts, provides the basic tools of communication in the specialized fields of environmental sciences between speakers of these languages. Each chapter has been revised in each separate language by specialists in the field to guarantee the authenticity of the information presented. The author is unique in his approach, presenting the key-words in context, as opposed to simple glossary entries, allowing the reader to fully understand the complex relations between the word and the concepts involved. A comprehensive index written in all four languages guides the reader through the text, providing references to the words as they are used in different disciplines.

This is the new-in-paperback edition of The Oxford Dictionary of Statistical Terms, the much-awaited sixth edition of the acclaimed standard reference work in statistics, published on behalf of the International Statistical Institute. The first edition, known as the Dictionary of Statistical Terms, was edited in 1957 by the late Sir Maurice Kendall and the late Dr W.R. Buckland. As one of the first dictionaries of statistics it set high standards for the subject, and became a well-respected reference. This edition has been carefully updated and extended to include the most recent terminology and techniques in statistics. Significant revision and expansion from an international editorial board of senior statisticians has resulted in a comprehenisive reference text which includes 30% more material than previous editions. Ideal for all who use statistics in the workplace and in research including all scientists and social scientists, especially in law, politics, finance, business, and history, it is an indispensable reference.

This outline of statistics as an aid in decision making will introduce a reader with limited mathematical background to the most important modern statistical methods. This is a revised and enlarged version, with major extensions and additions, of my "Angewandte Statistik" (5th ed.), which has proved useful for research workers and for consulting statisticians. Applied statistics is at the same time a collection of applicable statistical methods and the application of these methods to measured and/or counted observations. Abstract mathematical concepts and derivations are avoided. Special emphasis is placed on the basic principles of statistical formulation, and on the explanation of the conditions under which a certain formula or a certain test is valid. Preference is given to consideration of the analysis of small sized samples and of distribution-free methods. As a text and reference this book is written for non-mathematicians, in particular for technicians, engineers, executives, students, physicians as well as researchers in other disciplines. It gives any mathematician interested in the practical uses of statistics a general account of the subject. Practical application is the main theme; thus an essential part of the book consists in the 440 fully worked-out numerical examples, some of which are very simple; the 57 exercises with solutions; a number of different compu tational aids; and an extensive bibliography and a very detailed index. In particular, a collection of 232 mathematical and mathematical-statistical tables serves to enable and to simplify the computations.
