This collection examines early modern women’s contribution to the culturally central mode of complaint. Complaint has largely been understood as male-authored, yet, as this collection shows, early modern women used complaint across a surprising variety of forms from the early-Tudor period to the late-seventeenth century. They were some of the mode’s first writers, most influential patrons, and most innovative contributors. Together, these new essays illuminate early modern women’s participation in one of the most powerful rhetorical modes in the English Renaissance, one which gave voice to political, religious and erotic protest and loss across a diverse range of texts. This volume interrogates new texts (closet drama, song, manuscript-based religious and political lyrics), new authors (Dorothy Shirley, Scots satirical writers, Hester Pulter, Mary Rowlandson), and new versions of complaint (biblical, satirical, legal, and vernacular). Its essays pay specific attention to politics, form, and transmission from complaint’s first circulation up to recent digital representations of its texts. Bringing together an international group of experts in early modern women’s writing and in complaint literature more broadly, this collection explores women’s role in the formation of the mode and in doing so reconfigures our understanding of complaint in Renaissance culture and thought.

Praised by Voltaire and admired by Pushkin, Évariste Parny (1753-1814) was born on the island of Réunion, which is east of Madagascar, and educated in France. His life as a soldier and government administrator allowed him to travel to Brazil, Africa, and India. Though from the periphery of France's colonial empire, he ultimately became a member of the Académie Française. Despite his reaching that pinnacle of respectability, some of his poetry was banned after his death. This edition includes poems from the Poésies érotiques and Élégies, which established Parny's reputation; the Chansons madécasses ("Madagascar Songs"), which were influential in the development of the prose poem; five of his published letters, written in a mixture of prose and verse; the narrative poem Le Voyage de Céline; and selections from his sardonic, anticlerical later poetry. A substantial introduction discusses Parny's poetry in connection with its literary context and the themes of gender, race, and postcoloniality.

Chiara Matraini (1515–1604?) was a member of the great flowering of poetic imitators and innovators in the Italian literary heritage begun by Petrarch, cultivated later by the lyric poet Pietro Bembo, and supplanted by the epic poet Torquato Tasso. Though without formal training, Matraini excelled in a number of literary genres popular at the time—poetry, religious meditation, discourse, and dialogue. In her midlife, she published a collection of erotic love poetry, but later in life her work shifted toward a search for spiritual salvation. Near the end of her life, she published a new poetry retrospective. Mostly available in only a handful of rare book collections, her writings are now adeptly translated here for an English-speaking audience and situated historically in an introduction by noted Matraini expert Giovanna Rabitti. Selected Poetry and Prose allows the poet to finally take her place as one of the seminal authors of the Renaissance, next to her contemporaries Vittoria Colonna and Laura Battiferra, also published in the Other Voice series.

This collection of new translations spans the entire career of one of Poland's greatest poets, a writer whose work is little-known in the US but whose innovative style speaks to today's readers. Postwar Poland produced some of the greatest poets of the twentieth century: Tadeusz Różewicz, Zbigniew Herbert, and the two Nobel Prize-winners, Czesław Miłosz and Wisława Szymborska. The poetry of Miron Białoszewski, author of the spellbinding A Memoir of the Warsaw Uprising, played a crucial part in this extraordinary poetic efflorescence, as those esteemed contemporaries were the first to recognize, and if he is less well-known abroad than they are it may be because his playful, gnomic, defiantly original poems have been deemed so difficult to translate. Here, however, two of the finest American translators of Polish, Clare Cavanagh and Alissa Valles, have teamed up to present the first full-length collection of Białowszewski's work in English, one that reflects the range of his singular achievement, from his poetry, to his short prose pieces, to the playlets that he himself produced and performed for private audiences in his tiny Warsaw apartment. The book draws on the entirety of Białoszewski's output, from his pathbreaking first book, The Revolution of Things, through such later volumes as--and their names alone tell us something about the character of this poet's world--A Calculus of Whims, Erroneous Emotions, Wasted, Get Lost, and Hums, Lumps, Threads.
