The study of sedimentary provenance has increasingly drawn both techniques and objectives from outside sedimentology. Aspects of igneous and metamorphic petrology, geochemistry, geochronology and isotope geology now complement petrographic methods, with the aim of achieving a deeper understanding of the origins, evolution and significance of sedimentary rocks, the basins in which they reside, and the source terrains which flank them.
