This book examines the iconic presence of second chances in everyday life. David Newman explores its various iterations in popular culture, commercial marketplaces, religion, intimate relationships, education, criminal justice, and human bodies. He analyzes how this concept—as a cultural aspiration, driver of policy, and lived personal experience—has become part and parcel of our individual sense of self and our collective national identity. While the rhetoric of redemption is familiar and ubiquitous, Newman uncovers the costs and constraints of second chances, paying particular attention to the factors that affect judgments of deservedness. Informed by an array of data sources including personal interviews, mission statements of nonprofit recovery agencies, images in popular culture, stories from the news, plot summaries of novels, and scriptural texts, Newman frames the second chance experience as the quintessential cultural paradox: a concept that simultaneously represents the pinnacle of our shared hopes for renewal and our deepest suspicions about the intransigence of human nature.

Just when life seemed rosy and sun was shining, he sustained a severe spinal cord injury in July 2019 following an operation, which left him with paralysis of both legs, a non-functioning right hand and long stay in the hospital, eventually leading to a forced medical retirement from his medical career and a wheelchair in place of a sports car. He had to undergo multiple operations but is now permanently disabled. Two months after his injury he was also diagnosed of cancer of the Thyroid for which he needed further operations. With a family so young he could not afford to give up yet, so he had to re-learn walking (limited distance with crutches), writing, holding knife, fork and lots of other daily routines but most importantly had to retrain his mind to accept the new normal. However, these adverse life changing experiences made him into a person of faith, gratitude and inspiration. Undeterred by the unexpected personal, professional, and financial implications of his physical limitations, and despite the unexpected end of his dream career, just months after emergency surgery Bhaskar completed an MBA followed by an MSc in addition to his medical degrees. At the same time, he continued with his entrepreneurial challenges. His intuition became a mantra for decrypting life’sclues. As a motivational speaker, he now urges others to tap into their own inner voice. In his own words, through his spiritual evolution, the adversities made him a ‘better man’ Poorer financially but richer in experiences of life he is now a voice for the disabled and has written the book 'The Second Chance in Life' as an honest reflection of his life experiences to motivate people that every adversity can still be turned into an opportunity. He also blogs on his website www.thesecondchanceinlife.com In ‘The Second Chance in Life’ this self-confessed workaholic acknowledges the challenges and miracles that have influenced his life and, in a bravely honest style, shares how even your darkest days can be a springboard for positivity. With various real-life examples and practical strategies, this book is an inspirational work for self-help and motivation. The book is to be launched worldwide on Amazon on 21st April 2022 and will be available to pre-order soon.
