This book is focused on relational processes in supervision for counselling and psychotherapy. The aim is first to introduce a relational theoretical stance, then to apply that stance to the process of supervision, and finally to offer practitioners immediately accessible resources for relational supervision. Within a relational perspective, supervisor and supervisees are viewed as partners who co-construct the supervisory process. Unlike other approaches to supervision where the emphasis is on specific techniques and strategies for supervision, the relational orientation of this book invites supervisor and supervisee into different understandings of the supervisory interaction. This orientation directs our attention to the importance of co-creating the therapeutic relation/alliance with special attention to the wellbeing of the the supervisee and the supervisor. Supervision, from this perspective, is focused on what participants are making together rather than on the individual abilities, strengths, and weaknesses of either the supervisor or the supervisee.

For many therapists, conflict with their clients, whether overt or subtle, can be a frustrating impediment to change. The same is true for clinical supervisors, who must juggle trainees' relationships with their clients alongside the complex and often charged interactions that take place during the supervisory hour. This book provides a blueprint to help supervisors navigate the most challenging dilemmas and conflicts that arise in the supervisory process. These include addressing skill deficits and competency concerns, working through role conflicts, and ethnicity and gender-related misunderstandings. Because these interpersonal dilemmas can be so challenging, they often represent a golden opportunity for real progress, in psychotherapy and supervision alike. With the aid of detailed and compelling case examples, the authors present a process model that offers specific strategies - such as exploration of feelings, focus on self-efficacy, and attention to parallel processes - that together enable supervisors and trainees to successfully resolve the problem at hand and achieve lasting success. This theoretically-grounded text is appropriate for supervisors and trainees of all theoretical orientations.

Supervising the Counsellor and Psychotherapist considers how to meet the supervision needs of trainee and experienced counsellors, psychotherapists and other helping professionals using an integrative approach that will appeal to practitioners from a broad range of backgrounds and theoretical persuasions. The book charts the development of the supervisor as he or she moves through making the transition from therapist to supervising the work of others and includes consideration of the advanced competencies required to supervise experienced practitioners. This third edition brings a number of contemporary perspectives to a well-known and widely respected core text for the training and development of supervisors. The Cyclical Model at the heart of the book has established its relevance in the UK as one of the best known frameworks for teaching and learning the steps and stages of supervision. All chapters in this new edition have been extensively revised and updated, and key elements include: - Two brand new chapters on deepening supervision practice and moving beyond supervising counsellors and psychotherapists - Updates on recent developments in supervision, including research outcomes, the use of technology and supervising short-term work - Creativity, play and the use of metaphor and imagery in supervision - Developing the use of self through relational supervision. Supervising the Counsellor and Psychotherapist is a key text for trainee and experienced supervisors of counsellors and psychotherapists, those who train supervisors, and supervisees wishing to better understand the supervisory process.
