Background: Individuals with agrammatic aphasia have difficulty in utilizing functional morphology (such as tense inflections and pronouns). Avrutin (2006) suggests that this population experiences difficulty in processing the constituents in the sentence for which a reference to discourse is required. Aims: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the production and comprehension of tense inflections (e.g., -ed past tense) as well as subjective and objective pronouns (e.g., “he,” “him,” etc.) at the discourse level in fluent and non-fluent individuals with aphasia (IWAs) and healthy individuals (HIs). Another aim in this study was to investigate whether the difficulty in processing of tense inflections and pronouns are related. In terms of the spontaneous speech of IWAs, this study aimed to investigate if visual stimuli (pictures of the Cinderella story) impact the quantity and quality of discourse that IWAs produce in terms of the number and type of the words. Methods & Procedures: Nine IWAs (four non-fluent and five fluent) and four HIs were enrolled in this study. A sentence completion task was utilized for both production and comprehension of tense inflections and pronouns. Results were compared within and between groups and functional categories.

This book asserts that language is a signaling system rather than a code, based in part on such research as the finding that 5-year-old English and Dutch children use pronouns correctly in their own utterances, but often fail to interpret these forms correctly when used by someone else. Emphasizing the unique and sometimes competing demands of listener and speaker, the author examines resulting asymmetries between production and comprehension. The text offers examples of the interpretation of word order and pronouns by listeners, and word order freezing and referential choice by speakers. It is explored why the usual symmetry breaks down in children but also sometimes in adults. Gathering contemporary insights from theoretical linguistic research, psycholinguistic studies and computational modeling, Asymmetries between Language Production and Comprehension presents a unified explanation of this phenomenon. “Through a lucid, comprehensive review of acquisition studies on reference-related phenomena, Petra Hendriks builds a striking case for the pervasiveness of asymmetries in comprehension/production.
