This volume resulted from presentations given at the international “Brainstorming Workshop on New Developments in Discrete Mechanics, Geometric Integration and Lie–Butcher Series”, that took place at the Instituto de Ciencias Matemáticas (ICMAT) in Madrid, Spain. It combines overview and research articles on recent and ongoing developments, as well as new research directions. Why geometric numerical integration? In their article of the same title Arieh Iserles and Reinout Quispel, two renowned experts in numerical analysis of differential equations, provide a compelling answer to this question. After this introductory chapter a collection of high-quality research articles aim at exploring recent and ongoing developments, as well as new research directions in the areas of geometric integration methods for differential equations, nonlinear systems interconnections, and discrete mechanics. One of the highlights is the unfolding of modern algebraic and combinatorial structures common to those topics, which give rise to fruitful interactions between theoretical as well as applied and computational perspectives. The volume is aimed at researchers and graduate students interested in theoretical and computational problems in geometric integration theory, nonlinear control theory, and discrete mechanics.

The Proceedings of the Fourth International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics, Edinburgh, includes talks from the 30 plenary speakers who between them covered the gamut of applied mathematics in topics such as superconductivity (S.J. Chapman, Oxford); elastic media (A. Friedman, Minnesota); mathematical modelling of the Internet (F. Kelly, Cambridge); Monte Carlo methods for financial applications (S. Tezuka, IBM Tokyo); liquid turbulence, partial differential equations, discrete optimisation, and computational aspects of all these topics. Speakers J.A. Sethia (Berkeley), J.K. Lenstra (CWI, Amsterdam), R.V. Kohn (Courant Institute, New York), S. Muller (Leipzig, Germany), C. Johnson (Goteborg, Sweden). Also included are summaries of the mini symposia, and details of the prizes. This important summary of topical and applicable mathematics from the world's leaders in the subject is a 'must-have' reference volume for graduate students and researchers interested in applied and computational mathematics.

In this book, the theory, methods and applications of separable optimization are considered. Some general results are presented, techniques of approximating the separable problem by linear programming problem, and dynamic programming are also studied. Convex separable programs subject to inequality/ equality constraint(s) and bounds on variables are also studied and convergent iterative algorithms of polynomial complexity are proposed. As an application, these algorithms are used in the implementation of stochastic quasigradient methods to some separable stochastic programs. The problems of numerical approximation of tabulated functions and numerical solution of overdetermined systems of linear algebraic equations and some systems of nonlinear equations are solved by separable convex unconstrained minimization problems. Some properties of the Knapsack polytope are also studied. This second edition includes a substantial amount of new and revised content. Three new chapters, 15-17, are included. Chapters 15-16 are devoted to the further analysis of the Knapsack problem. Chapter 17 is focused on the analysis of a nonlinear transportation problem. Three new Appendices (E-G) are also added to this edition and present technical details that help round out the coverage. Optimization problems and methods for solving the problems considered are interesting not only from the viewpoint of optimization theory, optimization methods and their applications, but also from the viewpoint of other fields of science, especially the artificial intelligence and machine learning fields within computer science. This book is intended for the researcher, practitioner, or engineer who is interested in the detailed treatment of separable programming and wants to take advantage of the latest theoretical and algorithmic results. It may also be used as a textbook for a special topics course or as a supplementary textbook for graduate courses on nonlinear and convex optimization.
