This book provides a comprehensive overview of current practices in pediatric perioperative care. Current knowledge on vascular and nonvascular access, regional anesthesia, and noninvasive cardiovascular and respiratory monitoring is described. The prevention and treatment of postoperative pain and unsettled behavior after surgery, as well as the long-term consequences of anesthesia and surgery are discussed. Prevention of chronic postsurgical pain and the brain damage that may be associated with anesthesia and surgery are also considered. The opening section is dedicated to patient care prior to surgery and includes preoperative assessment and preparation. Care in the intraoperative period is then described, including the appropriate care when performing surgery in different locations and in various specialties, such as orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, and abdominal and urological surgery. The subsequent section addresses perioperative care in children with special conditions, such as difficult airway, metabolic or neuromuscular diseases, or cancer. The remainder of the book is devoted to a range of further important topics and postoperative care.&nbs p;

Based on a program of study developed at the Children's Hospital Boston, Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, Pediatric Anesthesiology Review: Clinical Cases for Self-Assessment provides essential medical information for the subspecialty of pediatric anesthesiology. Illustrating the broad spectrum of the pediatric anesthesiologist’s practice, this book utilizes an interactive question and answer dialogue which imitates the simplicity of conversation and affords the reader high-yield benefits. The case-based approach encourages readers to collaborate with colleagues, improve their oral presentation skills, and prepare for challenging situations by explaining various anesthesia care plans and why specific data are required before and during the care of the pediatric patient. Written by a panel of specialists recognized internationally for their efforts in their respective areas within pediatric anesthesia and examiners for various medical specialty boards including the American Board of Anesthesiology, this self-assessment programmed text for residents, fellows, and clinicians in the field of pediatric anesthesiology offers extremely valuable advice. The ability to explain why, in addition to how, is central to the Children’s Hospital Boston program’s philosophy, and Pediatric Anesthesiology Review: Clinical Cases for Self-Assessment maintains this ideal in the crafting of this book. An interactive question and answer program is featured on extras.springer.com.

This volume, the first of a new series, deals with the basic aspects of anaesthesia, intensive care (IC) and pain in neonates and children. Internationally recognised guidelines aimed at standardising the most important procedures, such as the treatment of hypothermia, are also discussed. The book includes contributions from anesthesiologists from The Hospital for Sick Children, which is affiliated with the University of Toronto and is Canada's most research-intensive hospital.

Linking existing knowledge to new knowledge by presenting it in the form of a case or a problem is a popular and effective educational approach resulting in better retention of the knowledge and improved ability to apply that knowledge to solve real problems. This problem-based learning (PBL) method was introduced into medical education at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, in 1969. Since then it has been widely incorporated into secondary, undergraduate, and graduate education in a variety of disciplines worldwide. This new volume for the Anesthesiology Problem-Based Learning series reviews pediatric anesthesia utilizing the PBL approach. Each chapter deals with conditions and problems in pediatric anesthesia practice presented as a case stem with questions to encourage critical thinking, followed by an evidence-based discussion and multiple-choice questions for self-assessment. Cases were carefully selected to present a broad systems-based tour of commonly encountered clinical cases in pediatric anesthesia. The book can be used to review an upcoming clinical case or as a PBL tool. The "Stem Case and Key Questions" and "Discussion" sections can serve as the basis for interactive learning experiences for study groups or as a broad yet in-depth clinical review of the subspecialty for the individual learner. Self-assessment questions can be used as a measure of knowledge acquisition or simply as a question bank to prepare for examinations.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of current standards of anesthesia and intensive care in neonates and children, with a view to promoting standardization in clinical practice. The first part of the book, devoted to issues in intensive care, opens by considering scoring systems for the assessment of sick children. The diagnosis, prevention, and management of ventilator-associated pneumonia are then discussed, and the roles of high-frequency oscillatory ventilation and noninvasive respiratory support are reviewed. Further chapters address procedural sedation and analgesia in children, the progress toward ‘open’ ICUs with liberal visiting policies, and advances in long-term home mechanical ventilation. In the second part of the book, a range of important topics in anesthesia and perioperative medicine are discussed. After a review of safety issues, current trends in pediatric regional and locoregional anesthesia are described and a synopsis is provided on current knowledge regarding the use of central blocks in infants and children. Subsequent chapters are devoted to awareness monitoring, single-lung ventilation techniques, anesthesia in the context of severe prematurity, and emergence delirium. Pediatric Anesthesia, Intensive Care and Pain: Standardization in Clinical Practice will be an extremely useful source of information for both novices and more experienced practitioners in the field.
