Excerpt from Papers and Transactions for 1915 and Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Annual Meeting at New Haven, February 15 and 16, 1916 The Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers is now celebrating its thirty-second birthday. From a creeping infant, born in 1884 with a membership of only fourteen, it has grown and expanded, and we now find it well developed, with over 400 members. Dur ing the past year forty-seven names have been added, and we stand on a much better footing to-day than ever before; but in order to maintain the present high standard, we should have more money, and I therefore urge that the dues be increased from three to four dollars a year. Following the suggestion which former President Crandall made in his address last winter, viz.: that the society should have more frequent meetings for the purpose of giving the mem bers a better Opportunity to get acquainted, we have held smokers at each of the following cities: New Haven, Hartford, New London, New Britain, and Bridgeport. The average attendance at these gatherings has been fifty. N 0 special effort was made to make these meetings instructive, the principal object being to make, and renew acquaintances. Everyone was tagged. With his name, the tag serving a double purpose, first for identification, and incidentally for the benefit of those who might temporarily forget themselves, or be afraid to go home in the dark. My suggestion to the incoming president is that the larger cities be encouraged to form local branches of the society, and that each branch hold an occasional smoker or give an entertain ment for all members of the society who can attend. Such a movement will relieve the president and secretary of a great amount of work and tend to create a greater interest, and I believe will result ln a decided increase in membership. At these meetings, and more especially at the annual banquets, a half hour Should be devoted by the officers to receiving members, particular attention being paid to the younger men. I hope the programme of the future banquets will Show just when and where such receptions will be held. Our summer meeting and Clambake was held at North Bran ford, at the headquarters of the New Haven trap rock quarries. Excerpt from Papers and Transactions for 1921-1922 and Proceedings of the Thirty-Seventh and Thirty-Eight Annual Meetings: At New Haven, February 15 and 16, 1921, and New Haven, February 21 and 22, 1922 If you will let me indulge in the personal pronoun, I will say that after ten years or more of railroad service in New England, I spent some ten years in the service of the Interstate Commerce Commission and then was dropped overnight into the work of a railroad war board and graduated overnight from that into the work of a railroad administration. And passed from that to the work of the American Railroad Association which took up in Washington, at the close of Federal control. Some of the continuing operation that had been done by the Railroad Administration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Papers and Transactions for 1919 and Proceedings of the Thirty-Sixth Annual Meeting at New Haven, February 17 and 18, 1920 I will say all used by our troops except a little purchased from the F rench - were manufactured by our laboratories at West Street. So far as I know the matter of sound-ranging equipment dur ing the active period of the war was the most closely guarded secret of the war. It was very closely guarded for the reason that the Allies had reason to believe that they had a better means, a better apparatus for locating the position of enemy guns than did the Germans; and for the further reason that they did not know of any of their secrets having leaked out. The result was that when we were set at the task of developing and completing this apparatus, we were impressed with the necessity of keeping everything very secret; and when we set to work to manufacture this apparatus the pieces were manufactured under faked names and in different places, and the assembling work, which was nor mally entrusted to mechanics, was actually done by two or three very high-priced and reliable engineers, who with their own hands assembled the apparatus, adjusted it, tested it out, boxed it up, sealed the boxes, and turned it over to the military forces for shipment to France. As a matter of fact, although I was in uniform and in charge of these laboratories, I found it difficult to get into the rooms where this work was done. The guards were very suspicious of everyone, and unless you had proper credentials, they would not let you in. Whenever the rooms were left, the locks were sealed and the seals stamped with the time, and were not supposed to be opened except by properly accredited Officers.
