Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III THE SUPERINTENDENT ? HIS PREROGATIVES While he is the chief officer in the Sunday school, the superintendent is naturally amenable to the power which placed him in office, whether it be the assembled members of the church to which the nasi Subor. school belongs, or an official board of the church. He is also in a sense second in command in the Sunday school, the pastor being the chief officer of the church in all its departments of work. He is a subordinate more in name, though, than in fact, as his work is of a character which necessarily renders his plans operative and his decision final in nearly everything connected with the management of the school. The superintendent's position is one whose responsibilities are divisible to only a limited extent. After he has placed upon the shoulders of his associate officers every burden which can with pro- Fixed Official, Burden. priety be transferred from his own, there remains, essentially and unavoidably, a responsibility which attaches to no other lay officer in the church. This being true, hisprerogatives should be commensurate with the burden which he must carry. That is to say, having been chosen to direct the school, he should be allowed (except under conditions rarely known) without official interference to direct it.
