This book brings together fifteen comprehensive studies of significant North American scholars of comparative education from the 20th century. Providing relevant biographical detail, chapters analyse each scholar’s approach to comparative education and their on-going influences on the field. Comparative studies in education have long benefited from the work of significant individuals who have collectively advanced the field, making it a vibrant and intellectually fruitful area of educational research. Offering a unique, systematic exploration of the work of the founders of comparative educational research, North American Scholars of Comparative Education emphasizes the importance of understanding the accomplishments of key historical figures in the field, and considers the legacies such individuals have created. This book presents an in-depth look at the state of transnational education and comparative perspectives on education systems between Germany and other nation states. It explores how a transnational education identity in secondary and tertiary institutions has developed in the German and other national contexts and which lessons can be learned from current challenges and successes of education systems. It uses detailed case studies to promote critical rethinking of current educational practices in high schools and universities, specifically of race, gender, religion and learner ability in educational settings. It understands learning and teaching as an arena to discuss transnational education opportunities in the 21st century as an emerging or evolving discourse on contemporary forms of transnationalism.

Although in Latin America there are no educational programs specialized in comparative education, as there are in some European, Oriental and North American universities, there are scholars who cultivate this field. With the production of this book, the authors -most of them affiliated to member organizations of the World Council of Comparative Education Societies- are walking towards a Latin American network of researchers with an interest in establishing a dialogue with non-Spanish speaking colleagues from the rest of the world. This is the reason of our effort in writing most of the chapters in English. Comparative education, as all disciplinary fields, has evolved with different ways of thinking, approaching and constructing its objects of research and analysis, which are nurtured by different epistemological traditions living together in our times, enriching and bringing complexities. From Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Costa Rica and Mexico, the authors of the book pose questions, historical descriptions, reflections, discussions and cases to set forth their views.

Schoolteachers and the Nordic Model examines the cultural distinctiveness of the Nordic teaching profession and teacher training compared to examples from Europe and North America. The book explores the concept of these ‘teacher cultures’ as various dimensions of professional identities, recruitment patterns, teachers’ social status, values and knowledge. Comparative Education examines the common problems facing education systems around the world as the result of global economic, social, and cultural forces. Issues related to the governance, financing, provision, processes, and outcomes of education systems for differently situated social groups are described and analyzed in specific regional, national, and local contexts.

Since 1988, the Board on International Comparative Studies in Education (BICSE) at the (U.S.) National Research Council of the National Academies has engaged in activities designed to increase the rigor and sophistication of international comparative studies in education by encouraging synergies between large and smaller scale international comparative education research, to identify gaps in the existing research base, and to assist in communicating results to policy makers and the public. Under the current grant (1998-2002), funded by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics, BICSE has sponsored public events and commissioned papers on the effects of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), the power of video technology in international education research, international perspectives on teacher quality, and advances in the methodology of cross-national surveys of education achievement. This report responds to a request from the board's sponsors under the current grant to produce a report that builds on its previous work.
