"The Gift of the Magi" is a short story by O. Henry first published in 1905. The story tells of a young husband and wife and how they deal with the challenge of buying secret Christmas gifts for each other with very little money. As a sentimental story with a moral lesson about gift-giving, it has been popular for adaptation, especially for presentation at Christmas time.

Congressman Bernie Sanders promises free things to his voters, but his voters and him don't seem to understand the term 'free.' This brings me back to the old saying that goes 'There is no such things as a free lunch.' Everyone who supports Bernie needs to read and seriously think about this phrase, because the 'free' that Bernie promises is anything but free. With more government control, more government programs, and more government money going to things like university tuition and healthcare, taxes are going to skyrocket. I mean, the money has to come from somewhere. The professors, administrators, and government officials over education need to get paid; and the government is never known for doing things effectively and cheaply. Plus, the healthcare professionals and doctors need to get paid and that money has to come from somewhere. But, many of Bernie's supporters and Bernie himself don't seem to understand this fact. Yes, I might get free university tuition, but I will be paying exorbitant taxes. Not to mention, we are giving much more power to the government over our health and education. This is scary to me. All these poems are taken straight from Bernie Sanders' twitter. I changed none of the spellings, grammar, or wording. The only thing I did was add line breaks to give the tweets a feeling of free verse poetry.

For philanthropists of the past, charity was often a matter of simply giving money away. For the philanthrocapitalists-the new generation of billionaires who are reshaping the way they give-it's like business. Largely trained in the corporate world, these "social investors" are using big-business-style strategies and expecting results and accountability to match. Bill Gates, the world's richest man, is leading the way: he has promised his entire fortune to finding a cure for the diseases that kill millions of children in the poorest countries in the world. In Philanthrocapitalism, Matthew Bishop and Michael Green examine this new movement and its implications. Proceeding from interviews with some of the most powerful people on the planet-including Gates, Bill Clinton, Warren Buffett, Oprah Winfrey, and Bono, among others-they show how a web of wealthy, motivated donors has set out to change the world.

The anthropologist Marcel Mauss, in his famous exploration of the gift in "primitive" and archaic societies, showed that the essential aspect of the exchange of presents involved the establishment of a social tie that bound the parties together above and beyond any material value of the objects exchanged. He argued that these intangible mutual "debts" constituted the social fabric. Godbout and Caillé show that, contrary to the modern assumption that societies function on the basis of market exchange and the pursuit of self-interest, the gift still constitutes the foundation of our social fabric. The authors describe the gift not as an object but as a social connection, perhaps the most important social connection because it creates a sense of obligation to respond in kind. They examine the gift in a broad range of cases such as blood and organ donation; volunteer work; the bonds between friends, couples, and family; Santa Claus; the interaction between performers and their audience; and the relation of the artist to society. Written in an engaging manner, The World of the Gift will appeal to anyone who is interested in how the world really operates.
