Stories of the mysterious and macabre from “Canada’s answer to Stephen King” (Helen Marshall, author of Gifts for the One Who Comes After). In this follow-up to his award-winning debut collection, Monstrous Affections, David Nickle stretches the boundaries of horror into a sphere of “uncertainty, of helplessness, of traditions and change. . . . The stories are sui generis in presentation, veering from the discombobulating nightmare that is ‘Basements’ to the squid-laden eco-satire ‘Wylde’s Kingdom’ to the sci-fi love of ‘Love Means Forever.’ When it comes to this book, only two things are certain; the stories never travel where you expect, and David Nickle is a monumental talent” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). “Don’t make the mistake of overlooking the talent based on preconceptions of what horror might be—read one of these stories and see if you aren’t hooked. . . . Believe the hype. David Nickle is very good.” —The Globe and Mail “Anyone even vaguely interested in horror or weird fiction owes it to themselves to give David Nickle a look, and Knife Fight and Other Struggles is a great place to start.” —The Winnipeg Free Press “Knife Fight and Other Struggles is a remarkable collection that drops some hi-fidelity weirdness on the scene. Nickle’s prose has gorgeous lines of symmetry and a steel spine.” —Laird Barron, Shirley Jackson Award–winning author “Dynamic imagination, masterful writing of both the everyday and the nightmare, characters that breathe, and a dark sense of humor make [Knife Fight and Other Struggles] a keeper.” —Jeffrey Ford, World Fantasy Award–winning author

The pulp magazines of the early to mid 20th Century are often "politically incorrect" by modern standards. However, the "Spicy" magazines -- Spicy-Adventure Stories, Spicy Mystery, Spicy Western, etc. -- were politically incorrect by their own contemporary standards as well. With the occasional passing glimpse of a creamy-smooth thigh (or other womanly part!), and often filled with sexism, racism, and over-the-top plots and language, they nevertheless manage to titillate with more innuendo than anything else. If you find such things offensive, this is definitely not the right MEGAPACK™ for you. But if you enjoy the occasional stroll down the back alleys of pulp publishing, here's a walk on the seamy side of the 1930s! Included are: THE SHANGHAI JESTER, by Robert Leslie Bellem BLACK MURDER, by Carl Moore SUEZ SOUVENIR, by Jerome Hyams THE HOUSE OF WEIRD SLEEP, by Charles R. Annette Gershon’s odyssey from depression-era Winnipeg to Stalinist Russia and back to Canada in the 1950s is both the seldom-told story of those who actually made that hopeful, doomed, journey, and a testament to the tenacity of the human spirit. Ten-year old Annette Gershon is content enough growing up in her father’s delicatessen on Main Street Winnipeg, but for immigrant families scratching out a living in the Dirty Thirties, even subsistence is a delicate balance, easily upset. Everything changes when her parents decide to take the family "home" to the Soviet Union to escape the devastation of the collapsing capitalist economy. Annette struggles to maintain her sense of who she is, first adapting to her life in Stalinist Odessa, then fleeing to Moscow, ahead of the Nazi occupation. But it is in the post-war years that her identity, and her very life, are threatened by the anti-Semitism of Stalinism’s final years. The Knife Sharpener's Bell is the story of a girl who tried to stop a train, but finds herself on the runaway train of historical events. It is a story about loyalty and betrayal, heroism and fear. What is most memorable about it is the empathy we feel for these characters, who must make their way through some of the twentieth century's most tumultuous events. The writing is infused with a poet's sensitivities to rhythm, image, and linguistic energy, yet it is also beautifully restrained – each image and each gorgeous observation is there for a very particular reason; the entire story hums with the tension that arises from the taut, athletic language.
